Re: Do you believe in evolution?
If I had a friend who didn't believe in evolution they'd still be my friend because somehow I befriended them in the first place and I care much less about their feelings re: our monocelled ancestors than I do whether or not they're bigots or whether they are interesting to talk to or all the other various aspects of friendships that exist outside your social media of choice.

Which, FTR, has been true for three Popes, and it's been seven since the first one to officially say that evolution was not incompatible with Catholic doctrine.
(Pius XII said that evolution is compatible with God in '56 - almost 60 years ago! - though he didn't believe the evidence was clear enough to say it was true. Then nobody spoke on it one way or the other for 40 years, until John Paul II reiterated the first part, and then added that the evidence was clear that it was true, in '96. The truth can't contradict the truth, and God doesn't lie, therefor doctrine must acknowledge science.)

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 01:44 am (UTC)(link)Yes, that was weird. Suddenly it was 'big news', and I'm like, okay, that's nothing new, we were taught evolution all the way through Catholic school, and so were my parents and grandparents. Not sure why it got the big media spin.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 02:45 am (UTC)(link)Not conservative Protestants (nor conservative Christians, in general). Evangelical Protestants support six day creationism because they believe every letter of the (poorly mistranslated and out of date by about four hundred years) KJV as absolutely literal, and has to be read as such. Even the metaphors, the allegories, and the parables. Though they tend not to pay much attention to those, unsurprisingly.
TL;DR: conservative and Evangelical are pretty much poles apart, when it comes to Christian denominations.
