Dude even the goddamn Pope says evolution is real. Your attempt at trying to start wank is kinda stale.

If I had a friend who didn't believe in evolution they'd still be my friend because somehow I befriended them in the first place and I care much less about their feelings re: our monocelled ancestors than I do whether or not they're bigots or whether they are interesting to talk to or all the other various aspects of friendships that exist outside your social media of choice.

Not every Christian accepts the Pope as an authority, though. My friend isn't Catholic, she's from a fundamentalist Protestant sect. We're still friends, I just don't know what to say when she says things like, "... ha, like THAT really happened" when a topic like a new scientific discovery turns up that's another missing link in the evolution of humans turns up, or something similar.

I'm trying to say that this is a stale wank attempt, that's all. I know damn well not every christian looks to the Pope for guidance! Goddamn.

Okay, sorry. For a stale wank attempt, it's mostly generated civil discussion. Controversial topics aren't always wankbait.

Dude even the goddamn Pope says evolution is real.

Which, FTR, has been true for three Popes, and it's been seven since the first one to officially say that evolution was not incompatible with Catholic doctrine.

(Pius XII said that evolution is compatible with God in '56 - almost 60 years ago! - though he didn't believe the evidence was clear enough to say it was true. Then nobody spoke on it one way or the other for 40 years, until John Paul II reiterated the first part, and then added that the evidence was clear that it was true, in '96. The truth can't contradict the truth, and God doesn't lie, therefor doctrine must acknowledge science.)

Yeah, I'm Catholic! I know that. It's one of the things that kept me in.

Fair enough. I've just seen too many people talking like Francis is the first to say it*, and felt that it needed to be stated.

* Including one who came into the middle of a discussion about how he wasn't...

Yes, that was weird. Suddenly it was 'big news', and I'm like, okay, that's nothing new, we were taught evolution all the way through Catholic school, and so were my parents and grandparents. Not sure why it got the big media spin.

What the Pope says isn't necessarily going to have much clout with the people who believe in creationism/intelligent design, though. As I understand, most of the people who support ID aren't Catholic, but rather conservative Protestants. There's some overlap in beliefs, but it's not exactly the same.

DA

Not conservative Protestants (nor conservative Christians, in general). Evangelical Protestants support six day creationism because they believe every letter of the (poorly mistranslated and out of date by about four hundred years) KJV as absolutely literal, and has to be read as such. Even the metaphors, the allegories, and the parables. Though they tend not to pay much attention to those, unsurprisingly.

TL;DR: conservative and Evangelical are pretty much poles apart, when it comes to Christian denominations.

There are actually a fair number of Protestants who are not King James Only Evangelicals who are also creationists. Example: Missouri Synod Lutherans, are both conservative and creationist. In contrast, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) is both liberal and accepts evolution.
