Do you believe in evolution?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Vs. creationism/intelligent design. How would you deal with a friend who doesn't? I'm usually a live and let live person, but it bugs me that people can sit in climate controlled surroundings playing a game on their iphone while their lives depend on medication and medical advances all possible through science, but oh yeah, evolution is totally bogus because rainbows are so pretty only a deity could do that.

I don't believe in evolution. I understand it. You either understand evolution or you don't. There's no belief involved.

I wouldn't argue because that tends to make people even more stubborn.

Honestly, you might not be able to get through to them. I'm a biologist (currently working on getting my PhD) and one of my relatives is an MD. And he doesn't believe in evolution. Even though he's Catholic and the Catholic Church officially supports evolution as being consistent with dogma.

Someone people are just stuck in their ways.

Leave it be. Even though you're right, trying to change someone's beliefs when they're not willing to listen will only result in hard feelings.

I don't know, try to explain it to them, unless they really just don't give a shit in which case just let it be.

The thing that bothers me about this post is that it seems like you care less about whether or not they have a correct understanding of the concept of evolution, and more about whether they display a properly reverential, awe-struck attitude towards Science. I dislike that attitude quite a bit.

Dude even the goddamn Pope says evolution is real. Your attempt at trying to start wank is kinda stale.

If I had a friend who didn't believe in evolution they'd still be my friend because somehow I befriended them in the first place and I care much less about their feelings re: our monocelled ancestors than I do whether or not they're bigots or whether they are interesting to talk to or all the other various aspects of friendships that exist outside your social media of choice.

I know people like this. NO idea how people can be college educated, 21st century dwellers and tech addicts and not grasp (or refuse to accept) basic concepts in biology, but... yeah. It happens. In everyday conversation, I like to work in offhand remarks reminding my relatives of things that debunk the theory of a 4000 year old earth, etc. and watch them squirm.

I have a creationist friend. She can think what she wants. I have other friends who likely find my beliefs absurd, but they don't judge me.

I believe it, but I can easily reconcile it with my religious beliefs. So God works and designs in logical ways.

I don't so much "believe" in evolution as I accept that this is pretty much the accepted consensus in the scientific community.

Honestly, I find that people who do not believe in evolution simply do not WANT to see the evidence, because it's all around them. They cling on to their faith, doing a metaphorical equivalent of putting their hands over their ears and screaming "nah nah, can't hear you".

In other words, I don't think you can convince your friend if they don't want to be convinced.

If they come from a fanatically religious background, getting them out of there and exposing them o more rational people can help - but it's often a long process, and it still has to come from them wanting it in the end.

I do. I'm no scientist, but the science classes I suffered through presented arguments that convinced me.

The religious thing is a non-issue. Catholics have been okay with evolution since the 50's. Personally, I've always figured that evolution was just how God formed everything to get it just how He wanted it. Why snap your divine fingers when you can watch everything grow and change?

It's hard. I have some religious family who are really dismissive of evolution. I want to try to get them to read some Stephen Jay Gould (as if they even would).

My attitude is this: I don't care if you believe it, just try to understand it. Too many people apparently don't understand the importance of a substantially non-teleological model to modern science, or do, but just sneer at it. And that's really terrifying for how society deals with nature and science in general--far beyond whatever we know or guess about the quirks of the development of biodiversity.

I believe God had a hand in evolution :)

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Catholic girl chiming in! Sorry your friend bugs you so much. I guess there are people out there who are terrified that anything not stated in the Bible is going against God...or something. It bugs me, too. (TBH, I'm just as bothered by people who will constantly argue that God doesn't exist and how can anyone believe in a fairy tale? I just smile and say "that's why we call it faith, my friend.")

I do believe in God and I also believe in evolution. I believe in Creation and I believe in the Big Bang. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Maybe the Word was the Big Bang, and the Genesis story covers not just the Earth, but the universe. Stars go supernova and their dust spews out into the universe. That dust becomes new stars and new planets. Also, God made man out of DUST, right? Right! So there you go. Ashes to ashes, space dust to space dust. :)

I try not to take the Bible totally literally; if it was written today it would be written very differently than it was at the time. We write what we know and the people back then didn't know the things we know today. That's why I don't always take everything it says literally. Still, I also believe in the mysteries and miracles written about-- especially God manifesting Himself through Jesus to take on our sins and save us through the Resurrection. I believe there are things in life that can't be explained purely by science and vise versa.

I believe our existence is humanity going to school, and the new discoveries we make are how we advance to the next grade level. I say that because it seems ten more questions come up for every new answer we uncover about our existence.

I see it as God saying, "Awesome! You got that, now here's your next assignment. Let's see you figure THIS out. Good luck, kids!"

Sure.

I'd seriously evaluate whether or not I wanted to continue being friends with them. If I did, I'd avoid the subject, and if not, I'd just walk away - if someone refuses to believe factual evidence over a story, you're not going to convince them.

Re: Do you believe in evolution?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, I believe in evolution, and yes I have a friend who believes in - I don't know if it's intelligent design, per se, but that the world was literally created in 7 days.

We're both religious, it had come up, and we both live and let live. We discussed it a few times, but we agreed to disagree.

A different acquaintance felt the need to shoe-horn the issue into conversation, and I'd be more inclined to argue with her. But if they're not trying to convert me into their thinking, I'll let it be.

I don't know that belief is the right word, but I go with science, and that whole falsifiable evidence thing they've got going.

Kinda off topic: Spiritually I've come to the conclusion that all of existence is the ultimate Rube Goldberg machine, of which we are all tiny parts who can never comprehend the final goal to be achieved.

Re: Do you believe in evolution?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but I also believe in God. Really evolution is, in a way, part of my belief system. It's hard to explain.

Re: Do you believe in evolution?

I don't say anything, but I'll absolutely never trust their word on anything science-related ever. They just lost my belief in them, that's all.

I mean I believe in both. Sort of? If by "intelligent design" you mean "Genesis, literally" then no, not so much.

It honestly doesn't really bother me that some people don't believe in evolution, UNLESS they work in a science field, because it's kind of essential to understanding biology as we know it. But it also bugs me when people try to tell me I'm a Bad Christian because I believe in evolution, or be rude/mocking about being anti-evolution, so then I will try to set them straight...

As a card-carrying Obnoxious Atheist (we meet on Wednesday afternoons at the FOE hall, we've got donuts!) I actually don't see how creationists can deny the possibility that evolution is just one of the many gifts given to nature by God.

Young Earth creationists though... that's a different problem.

No. But that being said, I don't "believe" in the fact that the sky is blue either.
