I didn't know about their history with Mamoru until just now...strictly an anime fan. That's pretty cool. I don't care much either way, I only liked Nephrite's relationship with Usagi's best friend and Kunzite and Zoisite because it made the characters sympathetic and offered some interesting development where otherwise there was very little. If the thing with the Senshi is more shallow and "pair the spares" in comparison, that'd be pretty irritating.

That's exactly what it is. Pair the spares.

Crytsal is following the manga much more closely, and to be honest the manga is very fast paced, and hardly anyone but Usagi gets any development in it at all. The Senshi/Shitennou thing was vaguely hinted at in the manga, I think Naoko Takeuchi said it was something she'd wanted to go more in depth with in the manga, but never got a chance too.

That's disappointing. I hope the anime takes time to actually do what she didn't get around to doing, though I wonder, since the characters and their relationships so far have been a bit bland in comparison to the first anime. I don't want their romances to be more of the same, taking up space that would be better served giving the girls more personality.

I hope so too, but it's only 26 episodes and it is going to cover the Black Moon arch too.

The first anime was definitely the best when it came to character development.

Wait, what? That seems absurdly short, especially trying to work the Black Moon arc in there, which didn't show up until 46 episodes into the first anime. Anime had more episodic filler, though, so. I dunno, just surprised.

They might just make it, if only because there is zero filler and everything is going fast.

At episode 10 for Crystal, the senshi have already visited the moon, spoken with Queen Serenity and learned about their past. The moon visit in the original anime didn't happen until... something like episode 43 or 44.

The Black Moon Clan arc has been confirmed for starting in January.

It is, especially compared to the fisrt anime.
The first arch of the manga is 12 or 13 acts long(it's been a bit since I read the manga so I can't remember exactly) each episode of Crystal has covered one act of the manga so far.

Sorry about that. Misfired.

No big. I've done that too.

The senshi/shitennou thing was mostly confined to an artbook image. There was hints of Kunzite/Venus in Sailor V and Jadeite/Mars in Casablanca Memory. Outside of that, it wasnt really hinted to in the Sailor Moon manga. The Shitennou were killed off too quickly for anything to come of it. Either way, it just comes of as pair the spares.

Ah, okay, that explains why the wiki article was so short. I can see decent story potential in actually expanding the concept beyond "this tab goes into this slot because that's what girls are into right", but I dunno if the writers want to accomplish more than exactly that little.

Re: Sailor Moon Crystal

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't seem like that way in Crystal though. It seems like "hey, Mamoru's got four single generals and Usagi's got four single senshi, let's just pair them together." Like, I wouldn't mind so much if they'd actually had any meaningful interaction, but it feels like contrived get together for the sake of it.

If only the first arc had more devoted to it than thirteen episodes. They could flesh out the senshi, generals and the romamce angle for them. It's so fast paced that there's hardly any time for it.

Eehhhhh. I never cared for the Starlites. I think it'd be awesome if Rini's court were the Senshi's kids. I hated the manga ending, because Usagi got to have her cake and eat it too, basically, and the Senshi lived as spinsters for her sake. I'd like to see them be happy. Really, it was only Michiru and Haruka that had a happy ending, aside from Usagi lol

It doesn't help that the revelation was Venus going "btw, we loved them in a past life" in the middle of a battle against them and the senshi deciding this means they can't fight their past loves, leading to them getting caught in an attack and having to be saved by Sailor Moon... who they were supposed to protect from the Shintennou. Yay for love?
