Sailor Moon Crystal

[personal profile] tasogare_n_hime 2014-11-15 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought everyone realized Crystal was going with the Senshi/Shitennou thing hinted at in the manga. So I was surprised this morning to check the sailor moon crystal tag on tumblr and find out Sailor Moon is ruined forever because this one adaptation has gone with Senshi/Shitennou.

Kunzite/Zoisite is my Sailor Moon OTP FOREVER, and I seriously am not understanding the rage. Still don't ship it beyond Mars/Jedite, but I don't mind it at all. I really just want the Shitennou to live and be friends with Mamoru, or at least be around to bug the shit out of him, and to be around helping to protect Crystal Tokyo. I want Chibiusa to meet their current timeline versions and be like "Good to know you guys were always dorks." Having Senshi/Shitennou kids to be friends with Chibiusa would be cute too.

It's because it was poorly handled. The writing for the romance in Crystal has been terrible in general and this was just more of the same. It's just pairing them up for no reason other than hey, hete's four guys and here's four girls, they should be together. There's been no development and little to no chemistry.

There is a ton vitriol for it happening at all, than it just being handled poorly.

Re: Sailor Moon Crystal

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
All I've seen on my side is because it has been handled poorly. And because it another case of pairing characters up just because they're there to pair up.

Re: Sailor Moon Crystal

Tbf the fandom is pretty damn vitriolic at the moment, especially in regards to Crystal. it's gotten to the point I pretend I don't watch it just to avoid the fandom and its fans/non-fans.

Re: Sailor Moon Crystal

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Since Kunzite/Zoisite is my all time Sailor Moon OTP and (I'm sure) it was common knowledge that Crystal was going after the manga and thus wouldn't include Kunzite/Zoisite, I simply decided not to watch it and spare myself the heartbreak. Apparently, a lot of people weren't as "wise".

Re: Sailor Moon Crystal

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
All the rage I've seen has been because the creators of the show have said 'we can't make the girls interesting on their own, the only way they'll stand out is if we pair up the senshi and shitennou'.

source: http://nagisayuu.tumblr.com/post/95769531839/excerpt-from-kobayashis-interview-in-the-visual-book

(note the last paragraph in particular)

Many people aren't pissed because they don't want to see that explored, they're pissed because the writers at this point have made it clear that miracle romance is the name of the game and things like characterization or decent writing aren't even on the table.

Obv a lot of people are also mad because Naoko herself said she wants Crystal to be pro-LGBT, but they're closely following the manga (in which Haruka/Michiru is pretty skeevy) and actively cutting out a gay relationship from the first show.

Re: Sailor Moon Crystal

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Naoko has never said that...

Re: Sailor Moon Crystal

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
When it comes to anime, Western fans don't really realize how isolated they are from it. Naoko probably hasn't commented on Crystal being LGBT friendly because that's more of a thing that gets discussed in Western fandom.

Re: Sailor Moon Crystal

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That gay relationship from the first show should have never happened. Kunzite was always supposed to be Minako's love interest, even in the Sailor V manga there's a short scenes about their past love. I'm sorry for people who shipped Kunzite/Zoisite, but it was never canon and it should have never been included in the first anime. Same with turning the Sailor Starlights into men, they were always women. Seiya was a lesbian, the man-Seiya from the anime isn't canon.

First anime canon is still canon.
Manga canon is still canon.
Crystal canon is canon too.
They're just different canons and that's ok, really.

I didn't know about their history with Mamoru until just now...strictly an anime fan. That's pretty cool. I don't care much either way, I only liked Nephrite's relationship with Usagi's best friend and Kunzite and Zoisite because it made the characters sympathetic and offered some interesting development where otherwise there was very little. If the thing with the Senshi is more shallow and "pair the spares" in comparison, that'd be pretty irritating.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
That's exactly what it is. Pair the spares.

Crytsal is following the manga much more closely, and to be honest the manga is very fast paced, and hardly anyone but Usagi gets any development in it at all. The Senshi/Shitennou thing was vaguely hinted at in the manga, I think Naoko Takeuchi said it was something she'd wanted to go more in depth with in the manga, but never got a chance too.

Re: Sailor Moon Crystal

[personal profile] darkmanifest 2014-11-16 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
That's disappointing. I hope the anime takes time to actually do what she didn't get around to doing, though I wonder, since the characters and their relationships so far have been a bit bland in comparison to the first anime. I don't want their romances to be more of the same, taking up space that would be better served giving the girls more personality.

The senshi/shitennou thing was mostly confined to an artbook image. There was hints of Kunzite/Venus in Sailor V and Jadeite/Mars in Casablanca Memory. Outside of that, it wasnt really hinted to in the Sailor Moon manga. The Shitennou were killed off too quickly for anything to come of it. Either way, it just comes of as pair the spares.

Re: Sailor Moon Crystal

Ah, okay, that explains why the wiki article was so short. I can see decent story potential in actually expanding the concept beyond "this tab goes into this slot because that's what girls are into right", but I dunno if the writers want to accomplish more than exactly that little.

It doesn't help that the revelation was Venus going "btw, we loved them in a past life" in the middle of a battle against them and the senshi deciding this means they can't fight their past loves, leading to them getting caught in an attack and having to be saved by Sailor Moon... who they were supposed to protect from the Shintennou. Yay for love?

Re: Sailor Moon Crystal

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
It kind of amuses me in the same way that people whine that something based strictly on the manga is so Usagi-and-Mamoru-centric. Dude, the manga was that. What were you expecting?

Re: Sailor Moon Crystal

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably similar to the first anime, the live-action show and all the SeraMyu which attempted to combine the romance and the friendship moments? And y'know, it's not like everyone has read the manga. Some even avoid it so they're not spoiled for Crystal.

(Personally I was hoping they'd improve the break-neck pacing and lack of characterization for everyone not Usagi and Mamoru, but apparently that was too much to ask since they went the opposite direction.)

Re: Sailor Moon Crystal

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a huge sucker for OTP's and if this is true, it would completely make up for the crappy week I've had. I need to catch up with sailor moon now.

Re: Sailor Moon Crystal

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't have minded as much if it hadn't been done so badly instead of:

1. Venus dropping the "we loved them in a past life" bomb RIGHT in the middle of a fight were the Senshi are attempting to protect Sailor Moon from the brainwashed Shitennou, and
2. this leading to them going "we can't fight our loves" and getting caught in a painful attack for no good reason. Sailor Moon has to save them.

Oh, and the flashback was the blandest possible. Venus says the senshi followed Serenity to earth and fell in love, and this is shown with... the guys lining up and looking pretty as the senshi looks at them. That's it. My friend who ships them was so disappointed.

That's supposed to be "if it had been done good instead of". Wtf brain?
