Re: what is the point of adaptations that don't change up the source material a lot

It depends. I don't mind adaptions that stray if there has been a faithful adaption. But it bugs me when there has never been a faithful adaption of the source material (Wizard of Oz). Also, Prefer if adaptions at least get the messages and the general idea behind the original story. Adaptions that miss the whole point bug me.

Oh Wizard of Oz. Have we talked about it before? I feel like we must have because I may not be active in that fandom (if there is one) but it's by far my favorite movie and I collect tons of things related to it.

Have you seen the old animated series that aired on HBO? I believe it was a dubbed version from Japan and IIRC, it was a fairly accurate adaptation.

I think that might be the most accurate adaptation, tbh, though I'd need to watch it again. They might've dragged it out with filler and such, but still. Definitely closer to the source material, and also included later books.

I think the Japanese version and the originally aired version were 54 episodes but they cut out a lot when they released it to DVD. I just remember it being more accurate as a child (it aired when I was 4-6ish) because it included the part of the Good Witch of the South and the China Dolls, that they used in that terrible Oz the Great and Powerful.

I also love Marvel's comic series for also including some of the later books.

there was an animated Wizard of Oz that was older than the HBO one and was drawn in this really weird cubist style. No other Oz fan besides me that I've talked to seems to have even seen it.

Possibly? I'm not actually a big fan of the movie. I grew up on the books, and I was annoyed at some of the bigger changes, especially the make it all a dream thing. I actually liked Return to Oz better because even though it combined two books, it felt more faithful to the spirit of the books.

I haven't seen the Japanese one. I've seen the animated movie that is a pretty good adaption.

which animated movie? Is she blonde in it? With music? I think that's also a Japanese dub. I watched it on USA/TNT when I was a child, maybe 8 or 9 if we're thinking of the same animated one.

I'm a huge fan of the movie for collector purposes. But I have so many knick knacks of the books. I didn't like the make it all a dream thing either. And I dislike the new Oz the Great and Powerful.

I do like rewatching Return to Oz for the same reason.

Sidenote: Did you know Barnes and Noble released new editions of the first ten books? They are in a two book set so far. I found the first one on amazon.
