I think the United States is a great country -- every single immigrant family that I've talked to is unbelievably grateful and happy to be here. And there's far more opportunity than a lot of parts of Europe. It irritates me when people shit on it when they've never lived in the US as well.

I also think people make too big a deal about racism in the US. Classism and lack of money is a much bigger dividing factor in my opinion. If you have money, it doesn't matter what race you are -- you're better off than someone without it.

agreed, i've seen a lot more self-hating americans in left leaning circles lately and it's incredibly annoying. almost as much as the canada and europe worship they tend to do.

Not necessarily. Asians have higher income than white people in the US. It's not that simple.

Yes.

Still though -- being a "minority" doesn't necessarily mean you're less likely to be wealthy. Both Asians and Pacific Islanders have higher household income than whites in the US.

It's much easier not to be poor if you're white.

In theory? It's much easier to not be poor if your family is already not poor, actually, and that goes for all races. What we can say is that it's much easier to survive while poor if you're white.

I think the US is definitely not the Evil Empire some people want to present it as and that it's a much better place to be than many parts of Europe (especially the East), but it's got its problems. The fact that some people are very grateful they can live there doesn't mean everyone else should be, or that the US politics/domestic situation shouldn't be criticized. In fact, a healthy political situation in a democratic country is one where the government and its actions are criticized on a regular basis.

I'm not terribly knowledgeable about the levels of racism, though.

It's funny, there's so much stuff that I strongly dislike about America, I'm hugely critical of it most of the time, and yet there's nothing that gets me riled up faster than when some Euro starts talking some superior shit about how awful it is.

Hahaha, for some reason, it doesn't bother me when you guys do it. IDK, it feels like you've earned that right, or maybe you're just less obnoxious about it.

Dual citizen who's lived in both countries and done a fair amount of travelling, and yeah, Canadians are on the whole a lot less vicious about shit-talking. It comes off less like sneering about those uneducated plebeians over there, and more like griping about that friend who you like but who occasionally does something incredibly obnoxious and makes you want to stuff them in a box for a while.

There are also a lot more direct comparisons between Canada and the US, and US policy is more likely to have a direct impact on Canada, given we share such a large border, and have such tight economic and cultural ties between the two nations.

We know all about it, we just find you too adorable to get mad.

I'm from the US and I'm not "self-hating" but my gog are we doing so many things wrong right now.

Criticizing our government doesn't mean hating our country. In fact I love my country enough to want to make it better.

We're a prosperous country, and we're definitely ahead of much of the developing world in terms of human rights, and those factors undoubtedly makes immigrants glad to be here. But it's all relative. It doesn't mean we aren't messing things up too.

And racism and classism are heavily connected. I think among poor people there's more racism, both against them from the outside, and amongst themselves.
