I think the background means it's the Thor fandom?

ayrt

Ahh, for some reason I thought the hammer was a gavel. I didn't even piece together the lightning part

My mind went straight to The Hobbit, but Thor seems like the better bet.

Don't do that to yourself. Give yourself the best ending you possibly can, fuck the fandom.

I'm torn between this and "hell, yes, mess with them as badly as you can". But the latter will only give you a sense of malicious satisfaction, which in the long term will likely not be worth it. So I suppose I second the advice to give it your best and ignore the fandom.

If you still want to have your revenge, you can actually say what you've said in this secret publicly. Depending on your popularity, it may easily have a similar effect, except your artistic reputation will remain intact.

Follow whatever plan you had for the fic. If you're really that bothered by the fans that you want to change to spite them, just do more of anything they complain about.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
ngl, I've considered doing the same.

Instead I just quit writing it altogether, so now I'm one of those iredeemably evil "has an unfinished WIP" people.

Well, you kind of sound like a jerk, but if you think the story itself isn't that good/is cliched and typical, and it's in Thor fandom (which has loads of awesome fic to spare), I kinda say go for it. It'll be memorable, at least, which is always a plus in fanfiction.

To me, by letting them drive you into this ragey corner you're giving them waaaaay too much power over you; it's not much better than authors who ask readers to vote on plot points and write to order.

But ultimately, do what makes you the happiest.

And hey, if you post in more than one place, give the bratty readers one ending and the reasonablde readers another. :p

you're giving them waaaaay too much power over you

Thiiiiiis.

I'm assuming that when you started the fic, OP, it mattered to you at least a little and you had some kind of story or idea to communicate. Has that changed just because people are douchey? Has what you wanted to achive with the fic changed just because of bratty strangers on the internet?

If yes (or if your reason for writing was only for fandom brownie points, in which case the doucey fans would affect that ambition a great deal...) then do what you want. If no, then don't let your work pay the price for some people being assholes.

I like this plan.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Jep, a "make your own adventure" style ending would do it! Lure the brats towards the ending of your evilest dreams with key words you know they will gobble up - and let your reasonable readers have the ending you intended from the start. I'm sure you'll get two highly amusing comment fields as payment for your extra effort. And you'll get to be fair to the non-brats which will be its own payment in the long run.

I'm sure you have readers who aren't entitled brats, so it would kind of suck for them but go for it I guess.

I've found it very helpful to channel my annoyance with certain fandoms into a few mean little unrelated drabbles. Posted them out of order and independent from my other stuff, got the horrified reactions I expected, felt pretty satisfied. Got it off my chest that way, and didn't taint my other works. (Few as they are, but still.)

I have, now and again, slipped people (or groups of people) I was pissed at in as expendable bystanders or villains. I found it very cathartic to kill them off fictionally. :p

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand how you feel. I grew pretty resentful of my previous fandom, and while thoughtless readers weren't the only reason I left they played a very big part.

I still wouldn't take it out on the fic though. If you've grown bored or tired of it them set it aside for now, but don't punish your work for the behavior of your readers. If it's been tainted to the point where you can't even look at it anymore without thinking about these people then abandoning it would probably work just as well to annoy them without you doing irreperable damage to your fic and your own self-esteem.

I'd never be able to finish it at all if I were that angry at my readers, but then I don't write WIPs so I'm not familiar with this phenomenon of begging readers. (I assume that's what they're doing to piss you off.)

I'd say finish it for yourself and don't give it to them. The story doesn't deserve such treatment and I'd never be able to do that to my characters. :)

Just post that you've grown disheartened and aren't sure you will be finishing it.

If there's anyone you *do* think deserves it, send them a pdf as a "draft" for "beta" with a watermark of their name on each page. bwah. Then if it gets out, you will know just who let it leak and you can rain the fire of the just upon them. Or the lightning of Thor. :D

Sorry to hear that, Hussie.

You could end it with a mysterious soap-opera death.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-23 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
You know, someone absconds with the body or injects something mysterious. Those always sort of piss me off because they have the character death (which I don't care for) and then they take it back (which feels like a con). It's a total emotional manipulation - you get the emotional impact of the character dying, but still get to keep the character. But it is absolutely in keeping with the comics/MCU.

If it's Avengers/MCU fandom, then I'm not surprised.
