Really? I had the impression that for a time, at least, this was the inexplicable juggernaut pairing. Who knew.

I believe it is the inexplicable juggernaut pairing. But that might just be my impression. Let's look at the stats on AO3.

1 - 20 of 2770 Works in James Bond/Q
1 - 20 of 231 Works in James Bond/M

hmmmm.

Me, I love Dame Judi. :) Where are you seeing hate, OP?

It definitely still is, although I gather that OP has seen some backlash recently.

Bond/Q is massively, massively popular. No idea where you are getting the idea that it isn't?

I didn't know there was that much hate except the general "ugh whitecock, started before the movie even came out" stuff, which isn't really virulent?

This? This is what's wrong with fandom.

People ship Bond/M? Really? And James with the gadget kid?

It's James Bond, it's not like he doesn't have a canon sex life.

Re: e_e

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
lots of characters who get shipped with various people have canon sex lives. I'm not sure what your point is here

Re: e_e

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh? What does that have to do with anything?

What's wrong with fandom is people shipping who they want?

Yes, Bond has lots of sex (except Craig's Bond really has far less than his predecessors), but his established relationships are with M, Q and Moneypenny. They're the supporting characters with actual history and characterization, far beyond one movie/book.

Also, M and Bond have insane chemistry in "Skyfall" (Judi Dench in general is incredible throughout, but especially in her scenes with Daniel Craig). I didn't see it as romantic chemistry necessarily, but I can totally see how some people would. And older woman/younger man pairings are few and far between. More power to the fans of this pairing. Having the freedom to go outside the norm/canon/expected is kind of the point of fandom. I'd say these pairings are everything that's right and awesome about fandom.

Now if the fans of any pairing start haranguing writers/producers of the Bond films about making their ship canon and generally just making everyone else miserable, *that* is potentially what's wrong with fandom. But I'd say there are a lot of things "wrong" ahead of shipping who you want.

And at the same time Q and M are the ones who get carried over from movie to movie. All his "canon sex life" love interests do not.

Yeah, and Bond's canon sex life is a giant snore-fest. Ohhh... he hooks up with a random hot chic who is likely to either be evil or get killed off by the bad guy. Lather, rinse, repeat... ad nauseam. That's inventive.

But Judi Dench is fierce and (though I despise the term) a total cougar and their interactions in films had that great antagonistic flavor with a bit of authority figure/rebellious underling who needs to be taught some manners vibe.

And Bond and Q may have only had like 10 minutes of screen time together but it was awesome, memorable screen time, full of banter and snark and intelligence. They played off each other so well that it was easy to see why the shippers latched on.

Those are the kind of interactions that are a lot more fun to explore in fanworks, rather than the same old, same old 'Bond + hot girl' equation.

You must be new.

Shipping isn't about taking characters who never have sex and getting them laid, dude. It's about hooking up two characters that you want to see together for whatever reason.

there are plenty of people on tumblr and AO3 with poor enough taste to read sherlock/bond crossovers, so no you're not the only one who likes them

[personal profile] dancing_serpent 2014-11-22 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee, I liked to ship Craig!Bond with pretty much everyone, so I gave the Sherlock/Bond crossovers a try, too. Found the idea of Bond/Watson very interesting. *g* Only thing I'm rolling my eyes at are all the various silly-sounding "Q" names.

I never seen any Bond/Q hate myself, quite the opposite I thought? I have seen anger directed towards the Sherlock crossovers though. Personally, not a fan of that (or SuperWhoLockAvengersBondWhatever in general) but eh, apparently other people enjoy it so I stay out.

Now thanks to this secret I'm wondering if Bond/Q/M exists. I suppose I have answered my own question.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I love 00Q and Bondlock also. I don't get why people who have such a problem with them just don't ignore them.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I think OP is mainly referring to the people over at ONTD. They hated the fact that 00q got so popular.

I hate all the dumb "Q is Sherlock's/someone's brother" crossovers, but I love Bond/Q so much. Which is why I hate the crossovers. Keep the dumb crossover shit away from perfectly fine ships.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Bond/Q is pretty popular, but I'm under the impression most people believe the shippers are all 16 years old "Sherlocked" tumblr users. There's a form of elitism too, Bond/Q is the plebeian popular pairing and Bond/M (or Bond/whoever) is only for people with refined taste in shipping.

I say fuck them, they're awesome on their own right.

I do dislike Bondlock, mostly because BBC Sherlock is an awful human being (and much much worse than Q).

Pet peeve: People who ask "... am I the only one who...?" when it's blatantly obvious that OF COURSE THEY'RE NOT THE ONLY ONES WHO LIKES AN EXTREMELY POPULAR THING. Seriously, why? Does it make you feel better to pretend you're a persecuted minority? I don't get it.

Because there's no way in hell a slash ship between two white guys where one of them looks like Ben Whishaw is a tiny minority of fandom.
