Pretend you're suddenly the lead writer of a Batman vs. Joker reboot. How would you write the Joker?

I wouldn't.

I'd kill him off by execution, because he does not actually fit the legal definition of insanity and no jury in the world would find him as such. Of course, I would immediately be fired and it would be retconned, but I would go out in a blaze of glory.

If by glory you meant stupidity, then sure.

It'd never make print, that'd be a pretty pointless gesture.

Another vote for BTAS Joker.

The Joker was an extra terrestrial all along! One of those lizard-alien types some people like to claim every president of the U.S. has been. And then the Joker runs for President of the U.S.! But Batman starts his own Bat Party to run against him in the upcoming elections. Turns out all the ballots have been rigged so that the Joker will win (or they've been rigged with dynamite, one or the other.)

The Joker spends the whole story telling jokes and pranking people. Batman's going nuts thinking the Joker is going to try to harm someone. The Joker's just fucking with everyone.

Like I don't find it believable that no one's killed the fucker by now. No hostage tab him over with a don't? No officer got behind him while he was grandstanding and shoot him ten times? No Harley in a hate phase of her obsession kicked him into his own elaborate tattoo? Bull to the shit. Pull the other one and stop with the masturatory reiteration of the same damn stories.

Your secret does make sense. Batman as a franchise is pretty much a dry well at this point.

Like all villains, he needs "rested" from time-to-time to avoid being by the numbers. Unfortunately DC is all about things being dull and by the numbers. I'll agree that a lot of his more recent appearances have felt more like dull fanfic than anything else. Too much trying too hard by people who don't really grasp the character but think that what Alan Moore did was really cool. I don't even want them to give him a big cliffhanger/finale issue. I just want him to scamper down an alley after his latest scheme gets busted and then never gets mentioned for five years or so.

And here comes the people asking why nobody murders the Joker yet.

I worry about people like that, I really do. I know it is a fictional character, but they always seem so blithe about about how cool it is and how badass it would be to do it.

Why doesn't DC kill off one of their most popular and marketable characters of all time??? It doesn't make any sense!

Like it or not, in the real world somebody would have at least tried to kill somebody like Joker by now.

I fucking agree. 100%. The Joker used to be a fun Batman villain back in the day. Now he's just a overplayed Villain Sue who does more and more ridiculous and atrocious things, because the writer has to top what the Joker did in the last story. And his "hehe love for Batman!" is so old.
Give me The Riddler, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, Two Face, heck, even a villain like The Penguin. Give me a new interesting Batman villain. Give me a B-list rogue like Killer Moth or Deadshot. Just not another Joker story.
Well, thankfully I don't give a fuck about DC comics anymore, so I'm not paying attention to any of this.

i agree so fucking much. the joker has been an overused pos character since the 80's, i get disappointed every time he shows up in a storyline. i stopped reading dc since the reboot, and i see nothing has changed. you don't know how disappointed i was when he was the subplot of the last dc animated movie. yawn.

and yes, someone should kill the fucker already. not even ashamed to say it. i have no fucks to give about people whining about how that would be wrong.
