I never thought they were great examples of friendship. They always gave off the vibe that they were hanging around each other because nobody else liked them.

Maybe there's something I'm missing. Maybe the episodes I didn't watch showed them being caring and supportive, instead of acting like jerks all the time.

They were horrible human beings, and I hated the "aspirational" message the show gave off. Why would anyone want to aspire to be so vacuous?

I was always vaguely happy that John Peel, my hero, hated it as well. It was so big over here. It was almost like a disease. Every time I changed jobs, all the people could talk about in the new office I went to was sodding Friends.

Wait, we were supposed to aspire to be like that? I love the show but certainly don't have any desire to be them.

What bugs me is that the show's been over for years now and we're still talking about it. We as a society need to move on with our lives.

DA, but I was actually only eight or nine when it came out, so it's only been recently that I've seen it. I'm sure that's true for others. I still find the show better than a lot of the stuff that I "should" be watching now.

Is it really supposed to be aspirational?
The lyrics of the song say "Your jobs a joke, you're broke, your love life's D.O.A.", and that does define a lot of their situations throughout the series.

Of course, in time they end up finding better jobs sometimes and better relationships, but to me it looked like it was about the daily struggles of actually not-so-unluncky 20-to-30-somethings. (because really, truly unfortunate 20-somethings wouldn't share a flat like Monica and Rachel's...)
