I never thought they were great examples of friendship. They always gave off the vibe that they were hanging around each other because nobody else liked them.

Maybe there's something I'm missing. Maybe the episodes I didn't watch showed them being caring and supportive, instead of acting like jerks all the time.

Aside from it making them bad friends (though I would agree that it does, or at least it makes them not very nice), what the heck is wrong with being a paleontologist or working in a museum? Seems like a perfectly decent job.

Because it was the 90's and NEEEEERRRDDDDDDSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

Science didn't really get cool until cell phones became huge. Then it all became about tech and everything science.

I didn't really get it either. Maybe it's supposed to be funny because while they make fun of him, in reality he was the most successful one of the group by far for a long time

I'm right there with you. Other than that one episode where Phoebe is pulling his leg about not believing in evolution, which was mildly amusing, every single word about Ross's job was negative and obnoxious. Standard insult-the-geek bullshit. I hated it. He should have run off with Charlie and lived happily ever after without those so-called friends.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-29 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The way they treated Ross always reminded me of the time I gave my nephew a toy dinosaur when he was like 3 and my sister freaked out because she didn't want him to grow up a nerd.

Because he had a geeky, science job back when that wasn't cool. And those characters were all about being cool. Didn't matter that he was the only one with a steady, well-paying job.

(Chandler had an office job, but it was never defined and he hated it. And iirc, they always made fun of his job too.)

Back when the show was on, I was 1) amused there was a paleontologist on tv! and 2) amused by them constantly ragging on him. But then, me and my family have always found my being in paleontology rather humorous (I mean seriously, who in their right mind wants to play with really really dead things all day?).

But on the other hand, yeah, them never being friendly about each others' jobs that I remember was pretty obnoxious.

I don't think it was specifically about the dinosaurs or the museum. I think it was about how obsessed and pedantic he could get about it. The others might have made fun of him, but he did consider himself to be the 'smart one', insisted he be called 'Doctor', corrected people all the time. I can understand the urge to want to make fun of that person, especially when he's wearing a dinosaur tie.

I think it's an exaggeration of diverse groups of friends who come together despite having different interests, as well as a bit of comedic sociopathy, if you will. You're right that it gets annoying though - and it also makes me wonder why Ross was supposed to be the best guy for Rachel and vice versa when Rachel had the least interest in his passion - and vice versa. Not believing in evolution aside (which could be rectified), I think Phoebe actually would've been better in that sense. IIRC she didn't make fun of him for it as much.

There were a lot of instances where they showed their caring for each other, more than the occasional jokes about Ross' and Chandler's day jobs. You were probably just too busy sneering at them as a whole to notice.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-29 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
it's a fucking sitcom, most of which are not designed to be overly analyzed or thought about beyond the 22 minutes they're on. i swear to god the internet nitpicks and ruins everything.

Yeah, I never got that other than it being a whattanerd joke. How is it not one of the coolest studies? I remember they opened a lecture 101 course for the open studies crowd, and there being this wait list if you didn't sign up on the first day.

This was the same show where bug-eyed idiot Joey (and I do say that with affection) was somehow the guy who made panties drop wherever he went, and nobody was perplexed by it. Friends didn't really operate according to what made sense.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-30 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I hated how they treated Ross in general, not just with his job.

Constantly mocking his past divorces, his job, even his son from one of said divorces, pretty much anything he said or did.

Sure, he could be sort of braggy about how smart he was, but did they justify him always being the butt of every joke?

A lot of friends make fun of each other (yes, even about things they really care about.)

(Anonymous) 2014-11-30 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
They made fun of Chandler's job, Joey's acting and acting in general, Phoebe's singing and a little about her massage therapist job, Rachel's jobs (though a lot more about the waitressing than the fashion ones), and Monica's cooking.

But a lot of jabs at Ross's job had more to do with his sense of superiority and his obliviousness to the fact that way he presented many of the more technical aspects of his field of study was boring to many people.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-30 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, it's a sitcom. This type of behavior is pretty typical for most shows like this. The same shitty treatment of friends/family goes on in Seinfeld, That '70's Show, Married with Children, etc.

Depending on your circle of friends and your family it might seem cruel to mock someone who is passionate about something, but I never saw it as something really malicious. Maybe because my family teases each other about stuff a lot and it's pretty harmless.

If it was legit bullying then it might get uncomfortable, but I never saw it like that.

They didn't tease him because he was a nerd. They did it because he was a condescending ass about the job, and he'd use jargon around them without explaining it.

I agree completely. They were such shallow, anti-intellectual assholes about it. It's one reason I thought Rachel should have ended up with Joey--they were more on the same level.

I think they made fun of him because he was kind of a pompous ass, not because he was a paleontologist. He looked down on Rachel's job more than once, and not as a joke either.
