tw: r*pe

I don't understand, why would you write rape like that? I see it all the time with other words, too, like id*ot, how does that help? Would it make it harder to block for triggers, if you block "rape" but someone insists on writing it out as "r*pe"?

I was just thinking this when I saw someone wrote a slur on a post. Like how about you just call it the r-slur instead of some half assed censoring.

Honestly I've never seen it written like that, but my guess would be:
- some weird SJW political correctness thing
- not actually writing out the word to avoid triggering people, I guess.

But yes,I think on tumblr that would make it HARDER to block it.

Seriously. Wouldn't the considerate thing to do be to leave the whole word so filtering software can pick it up and do its thing? This would just make it more likely that someone who really doesn't want to see it would see it in the first place.

Because if you don't type out all the letters, you're not really typing the word. Whether or not the asterisk-replacing messes with the filters depends on what filters you're using; based on the test I did just now, Xkit Blacklist does not filter out stuff tagged "r*pe" when you've blacklisted "rape".

Are they trying to make it so people will the trigger will see it then? Do they not realise?

I think it's along the same lines of not wanting to say nigger or bitch. So we say N-word and b**** or B-word. Basically, it's giving the word a thousand kinds of power over common sense. Because ho ho, you didn't say a bad word! (But you made it harder for people to avoid the bad topic it surrounds and everybody knows what the word is, but good on you for not using that word, right?)

Hey, maybe it's warning for people who're triggered by rope?Ever think of that?

Or things that are ripe.

But it doesn't work for them either.

Starring out letters makes sense if the word itself has power beyond what it symbolizes. ...Or if you're trying to outsmart a filter.

it's less jarring to look at, personally, while still being obvious as to which word it is. as someone who has been assaulted, i find it preferable to seeing the full word, and i know it helps many others. it takes no extra effort to type it that way either so i'm happy to type it that way regardless of my own "bias."

eta: generally (at least in my experience) ive seen people on tumblr type it this way in the body of the post, but in the tags it is spelled out fully specifically so that blacklist filters will catch it. ive seen seen it tagged with the asterisk though im sure some people do type it that way.

I think some people write things with the asterisk so that it's harder for people to find it when they're trolling search/(trigger) for people to harass.

Re: tw: r*pe

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
People aren't really giving it a lot of thought, IMO. They're probably just doing it because it's done for bad words like f*ck, so why not words like "rape"? I don't buy the idea that even the WORD "rape" can be triggering because come on, who doesn't know that "r*pe" is "rape", and not people warning for possible rope talk.

Re: tw: r*pe

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
That's the whole problem with censoring "bad" words in general, isn't it? Everyone knows what the bad word is that you're sticking asterisks in or substituting for, so the effect is the same. You just get to feel falsely self-righteous for a few seconds.

Re: tw: r*pe

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's bullshit. Either don't write the slur/curseword at all or do it properly. Same goes for all "harmless" versions of cursewords (like feck, heck, etc.) - Either curse or don't curse.

Re: tw: r*pe

I find that kind of thing to be stupid as hell.

If you can't even deal with seeing a word then you SERIOUSLY need therapy, stat. Just sticking your head in the sand and avoiding it or censoring it like that is way more harmful than learning how to see it and be able to handle it.
