LOL, beards became a thing like 2 years ago when hipsters decided to glam up the redux rugged look from like 4 years ago (remember the backlash against manscaping and the metrosexuals?).

Beards have existed throughout history because they have always been capable of being grown, and they go in and out of fashion usually in a cycle of two to five years.
