I could've written this secret!

I was even doing this before I discovered cosplay was a thing at all, so it wasn't an issue of tackiness for me, just the little in-joke thing.

I don't do it as much anymore for various reasons, but I still rememember that weird line between frustration and pleasure as I traipsed around dozens of stores looking for that one, just right item... good times.

I totally do this. I get pretty much all of my fashion inspiration from fiction. I like to choose colors and styles that certain characters wear. I don't think anyone would ever notice, because it's all "normal" clothing.

Have you seen those websites like Polyvore, where people make up outfits? There are loads of people making outfits inspired by fictional characters.

That's awesome :D It reminds me of Disneybound, I love how creative people get in adapting a character's costume for 'everyday' wear.

'Bout to say, DisneyBound is right up OP's alley.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-05 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Same here! Although I do cosplay now an then - but only at cons, where it's reasonable and expected.

Especially on most fandomy tshirts and things looking tacky. Good lord.

As someone currently rewatching "Pushing Daisies" and trying to subtly turn my pre-existing wardrobe into something worthy of Charlotte Charles, I feel you OP. (I need waaaay more yellow stuff...)

That's really cool!

I've bought clothes primarily because they reminded me of a fictional character before.
I'm even thinking of actually celebrating carneval next year just to use it as an excuse to cosplay Sarah Manning from Orphan Black.

OP I do the same thing. It's like the best secret in the world because no one knows it and everyone assumes you're just awesome. Which you are, but with the help of "X", you've certainly left an impression.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-05 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I do the same thing, OP, and I name my clothes after the characters they represent. This meant I needed to do some explaining when my friends wanted to know why I kept referring to my winter coats as Trinity (black leather), Edward (red), and Cas (khaki trench).

(Anonymous) 2014-12-05 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I do that, but only to try to emulate the things I like best about the character. I don't think of them as real people.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-05 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
oh saaaaame. i mean, i do cosplay, but this is so much fun too.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-05 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's cool, anon. Doing it right.

[personal profile] alenxa 2014-12-05 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I do all three. Strangely, now that I think about it, they rarely have any precise overlap.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-05 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
I love doing this! I call it stealth-cosplaying :D

(Anonymous) 2014-12-05 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely do this! Sometimes it helps me put a good/confident face on the day-- it's hard to feel too bad when you're taking your inspiration from Kate Bishop :)

(Anonymous) 2014-12-05 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
You rock, OP. Keep on having fun.

I, on the other hand, spent my last day in high school dressed up as Four (the Doctor from Doctor Who). I am completely flabbergasted at your talent for subtlety.

I love this. I'm currently searching for a corduroy miniskirt that I can wear and feel more like Lightning from FFXIII. It's fun to have little references like that.

I do this too, all the time. I love planning outfits or finding accessories that remind me of specific characters. ;w;

I kinda do the same thing sometimes. Offhand, I can think of at least one skirt, one shirt, one hat, and one scarf I have that I like to wear because they remind me of favorite characters/shows.

I'm fat. I will never do cosplay because I don't want to do fat cosplay.

I will stick to discreet fandom-related jewelery or things like my Autobot cap (blue with the Autobot insignia embroidered in red). I like tasteful little things like that, and if someone, in passing, notices and says something, it makes me smile.
