Personally, I don't think it's all that killed-your-dog kind of terrible because yeah, it doesn't change anything in the canon (especially when it's something like wanting a "free for all"romance mod for games like Dragon Age because that's really not affecting anyone else's game than the game of the person using the mod, so why would you care?)

BUT

People who like het already have the vast, vast majority of characters to choose from, orientation-wise. And while I get that sexuality is fluid and bisexuality is a thing, I still get this irrational protective "keep your hands off the one character that isn't straight" vibe when I see it. It's probably a kneejerk reaction because (well written) homosexual characters are so damn rare and IF there is a bisexual character in any given medium, they almost always end up with the "straight" option.

So yeah, while I don't think it's that big of a deal, I still can definitely see why it would upset people.

Oh, I agree with you entirely. Protectiveness kicks in when I contemplate these very situations.

Yup.

You're making the very large assumption that people do in fact always choose which characters they find compelling or are moved to write about. Maybe some lucky folks can do that, but for some of us, particular characters simply march in, seize control of our brains, kick any other muses out, and lock the doors with no input from us whatsoever.

(Disclaimer: I actually have never had any inclination to write any gay characters as straight. I'm just speaking from the experience of not having that vast pool of characters to choose from, because only a very select few are actually of any interest to me whatsoever and there's not a hell of a lot I can do about it.)

I'm making no assumption whatsoever. I actually literally said that a) I don't even find it that terrible and b) this protective thing? I think it's pretty irrational. I only described what it felt like for me, reading about gay characters in het relationships. I never said anything about the intentions of the fanfic writers who do that.

SA

And yeah, I really don't care about why you feel compelled in this magical mystical way to just ship a character. I never said anything about people controlling who they want to ship, so don't go putting words in my mouth and bemoan the fact that you're not one of the lucky people who can control their shipping urges (wtf).

Exactly. I sort of shipped Greggs and McNulty from the Wire because they had such great chemistry together. I didn't choose them on purpose.

Exactly this.
