Do you think it's weird

[personal profile] aboutelle 2014-12-05 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
... to talk to pets?

Occasionally there will be a scene where a character talks to another character's pet and they'll have some "Oh god, I must've gone off the deep end" moment. But I don't think it's weird at all (unless you're honestly expecting an answer) to talk to pets. It's proven that talking to plants makes them grow better, so why shouldn't you talk to animals?

Piggyback off this thread to ask about other things people might think are weird or not, if you like.

Nope. I talk to my cat all the damn time. Especially when I'm anxious/upset or depressed. It helps me a lot.

Are we talking like "Whoooz a ghoozy whooozy" talking

or like "CAT! Where is my phone! CAT TELL ME WHERE I PUT MY PHONE!"

Or, like, deep explications of emotional and philosophical issues

(I mean, I think my answer is that it's not weird no matter what, but I'm curious what you're thinking)

When I'm talking to pets, it's usually stuff like "Look, I got you a treat. Yes, that's tasty, isn't it?" or "Who's a good boy?" You know usual pet stuff.

When a character does it, it's usually about some emotional crisis with the pet's owner like "But I never meant to hurt her and now she hates me." *beat* "Great now I'm talking to a cat."

depends on what they're saying

They're either making fun of themselves or don't have pets either. Here's what I say to mine: "Yeah, Mommy's home now! Aww! Do you want your dinner, hm? Yeah, you want your dinner!"

I mean, I try not to do it in front of other people...

Err, no? I think it's weird that people think it's weird to talk to pets. I've always talked to my cats. Obviously we don't have deep heart to hearts and I don't believe that he understands my words. But he does understand my tone of voice, how I greet him, and so on. It's communicating. The cat talks to me, after all, why shouldn't I talk with him?

Also why I get angry when people scream and shout at their pets, even in joke. Cats and dogs (and presumably most common pets) definitely react to that tone of voice, and it's scary. Stop that shit.

Hell no. If it was, I'd be sent to The Sanctuary Bedlam.

Nope. Not weird.

Only if you expect them to talk back.

Nah. I talk to my cats a lot (and other people's cats occasionally), mostly stuff like "What's out the window? Is it a squirrel? Oh, look, it's a leaf!" and "I can't find my book. Cat, did you eat my book?" and "Let's get your food!".

I talk to my dog constantly. She loves it when we talk to her.

Nah, not really. Especially smart pets. I talked to my dog and I'm pretty sure he understood at least some of it - if only by my intonation.

Nope. Although I tend to stick to things like "who's a good, boy!" or "go away, you whore" or "aren't you the happiest dog in the universe! you never have to worry about stress and work and men who suck! oh, you're so fluffy, yes you are!!!"

So... yeah.

I shouldn't laugh at that 2nd one. Miki's other name is "move, dumbass."

I not only talk to my cat, I make up songs about her and sing them to her.

Just not very well.

Nah it's not weird at all, I talk to my pets a lot and tbh I find it pretty calming sometimes if I just need to get something off my chest but I don't want to talk to a person.

Not at all! In fact, I talk to my dog quite often.

My family talk for our dog, not just to him, but I think we probably ARE weird. As in, if one of us asks the dog a question ("Do you want a nice?"), another one will answer in his 'voice' ("Is the cat a pope-alic?"), usually snarkily.

We had one visitor describe our dog as 'the voice of your collective schizophrenia'. So yeah.

I talk quite a lot to my cat, then again before I had my cat I talked to myself so...

I also tend to say "mommy loves you." when I leave her, which I am pretty sure is a weird thing, but not weird enough that I will do anything about it. I think I should just have some unprotected sex and get a baby soon, at least then it won't be weird saying "mommy loves you." when I leave the kid.

the last part was a joke.... If it wasn't perfectly clear.
