I don't get that. I leave fic up for the enjoyment of people who might stumble upon it, not as advertising for my new fics.

Yeah, my crappy stuff from 15 years ago is staying out there...

As a reader, I appreciate the older ones that are out there (such as in the Pride and Prejudice fandom)

I left my older crappy fics up, but I changed my online name and moved on. That way everyone gets the best deal.

I really appreciate when writers leave their older fics up, but as a fic writer myself it's so embarrassing to even remember they exist.

Not advertising per se, but it feels bad for me to leave works up that make people think there's going to be more of it, even when I've moved on to something else (e.g. I still get people demanding a sequel to a oneshot I wrote many years ago despite my having left that fandom and said several times while in the fandom that there wasn't going to be one).

I suppose I'd rather pull older fic than have them cause disappointment. I know that's generally frowned upon, but hey.

The simple solution is to change your user name and no longer to post to your old account.

You can even mirror/repost some of your old fics you are still proud of, if you like, in the new place. That way there are no disappointments from readers.

I've been my username for a very long time, so it wouldn't be that simple, but it's something to keep in mind. I generally prefer a clean slate though.

But some people get so much enjoyment out of fics that they re-read too -- the fics are rarely anything to do with the author. People usually like the fic on its own merits as a story, and it's sometimes heartbreaking when a beloved old fic -- even a silly old one -- gets taken down so people can never, ever re-read it again.

Of course, it's your fic and you're entitled to do whatever you want with it if YOU want to, but if you're doing it because you think this is what the readers want, I'm just gonna say this: PLEASE PLEASE don't take your old fics down. Pulling old fic causes WAY more disappointment than "false advertising."

False advertising means at most a brief moment of disappointment when a reader realizes you're not in that fandom anymore. A pulled fic means that a story that someone could be very fond of, who they might want to show to other people, who might want to rec it - even if you think it's silly or poorly-written - who might be cheered up by reading or re-reading it, is gone forever. No matter how silly you might think the fic is, it might be something readers get a lot of enjoyment out of.

A fic is a story. A story has merit to it regardless of when it was written or what the author is currently interested in.

I once read a story where Snape was a "bogan" -I believe that's what they call it? I'm not Australian but that fic was a wonderful thing.

I went back a few months later and the writer had deleted all their HP fics. Everything. That was the first time a writer had pulled down fics I loved. Not the last, I'm sad to say, but it still makes me feel a little wistful. I get a physical sensation like my stomach dropping into nothingness.

If a writer would get in RL trouble for the fic they've written, then delete away. Otherwise, if it's just because the writer is now embarrassed, and people are still getting enjoyment from the old fics, it seems such a pity.

I have a note in my bio that I'm not writing fanfic anymore.

...I still get reviews from fic I wrote nine years ago (I shit you not) asking for sequels.

yeah, ditto. not sure what part of "one-shot" and "this fic is complete" that people don't get.

I do the same thing. If I posted it, I'm keeping it up in whatever archive it landed in. Even the unfinished WIP that haunts my dreams.

Same on the latter, sadly.

Same here. Unless the whole archive goes down (which has happened with one fandom-specific archive I used to use) then it's there for good.
