it's still the same general idea.

if a show has ten straight characters and one gay character, there are already plenty of straight characters to ship together, you don't need to make the one gay character straight.

whereas if the show has little to no gay characters, and they want to ship two guys/girls, they're going to have to choose some of the straight characters.

i've noticed if a show already has several prominent gay characters, you're less likely to find straight characters of the same gender being shipped together.

And let's face it, the majority of shows fall into the "has little to no gay characters" category, which is why people find making those few characters straight, even in fanwork, an uncomfortable thing.

Except you're once again making the assumption that everybody who ships and writes fic just browses through all the characters that exist and picks and chooses them like ice cream flavors, one (or two together) being more or less as good as another. It doesn't WORK like that for everyone.

If one particular character (or pairing) grabs my attention, that's it, man--game over. All others need not apply. I am stuck with that one character or OTP, probably for the next several years. That's just how my brain is wired (the same tendency also manifests itself in different ways in non-fandom spaces.)

As it happens, I've never latched onto any gay characters that way, so I haven't had occasion to write any as straight. But fuck yes I would, if it was that or not do any fun fannish things at all.
