China Now World's Biggest Economy

(Anonymous) 2014-12-05 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Just overtook the USA. Thoughts?

"China now accounts for 16.5% of the global economy when measured in real purchasing-power terms, compared with 16.3% for the U.S."

Laughing at the whining to come from the USA.

I doubt anyone cares much.

Not a surprise. China has had the US in its pocket for a while. It was only a matter of time before this happened. I should care, but I don't entirely. Is anyone here willing to explain the importance of this occurrence? I feel fairly ignorant of the economy in general. Thanks :]

It might be "bad" (for Westerners) because tastes drive the direction of the market. China's position becomes better and better and drives more and more manufacturing practices exclusive to China. Other countries lose money because they cannot sell to Chinese tastes. A lack of money creates a lack of options. That's the worst case scenario.

But it would be interesting and vindicating to see China become a paragon of quality after decades of "Made in China" being a stigma. Just like how "Made in Japan" redeemed itself.

I thought they overtook us a while ago? But yes we do owe them a great deal of money.

I'd rather be in second, and not abuse our workers quite as violently, if it's all the same with everyone else.

Google 'US Prisoner population new slave labor' or 'John Hopkins black lung scandal' or anything to do with big corporations moving into impoverished towns and then destroying the local atmosphere and environment, robbing people who can't afford to move away of their health. There's a lot of that in the US.

Hell there is in China too, just don't go claiming the moral high ground, 'cause you guys ain't got shit.

Told you we should have had the CIA drop a few ebola victims in Chinese cities. We could have had China back on a paddy-field subsistence economy in a few months if we'd taken the opportunity. Too late now though, welcome to the New Chinese Century.
