Dreadlocks and non POC people.

[personal profile] otakugal15 2014-12-05 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I got into an argument about that with someone Tumblr.

I haven't done extensive reading, but I'm pretty sure that the dreadlocks here in the states came from the whole Rastafarian thing that was appealing to many people through the 70s and 80s. Plus, I just don't see how HAIR is a bad thing to do with what you want.

And yes, dreadlocks can damage your hair, depending on your hair make up, but...it's still a question of, why do YOU care? It's not your hair. If I wanna shave off sections of my own or do up dreadlocks or bleach it, that's my problem and not anyone else's.

Now, were we in a country like Greece, or where certain Buddhist or Hindu practices are done, then yes, dreadlocks would be considered rude and disrespectful, but we aren't (the greece thing might not really apply today, but the greeks had a history of dreadlocks, so...idk there).

To me, this isn't like a Native American war bonnet. It's just a case of self expression.

But I wanna know what everyone thinks about it, cause tumblr has this really fucked up view on cultural appropriation and I don't think hair falls under it like certain religious and ceremonial pieces do.

(don't get me started on people who say eating sushi is cultural appropriation, cause i wanna smack those people badly)

Just do it and don't worry about what other people think. It isn't cultural appropriation, it is a damn hair style that's been around for a long ass time.

I don't wear them myself, but there's this post going around comparing this white girl, who actually looks pretty good with them, to and ungroomed dog. And I'm just...goggling at the stupidity of it.

Ayrt

Oh okay. Just ignore it or laugh at the stupidity of it. It is just ridiculous to call wearing dreads cultural appropriation.

It looks awful on white people but racist it is not.

some SJW's have gotten it into their heads that eating other cultures/nations dishes is appropriation.

Or, as variant, that eating them non-traditionally is (for example, putting kimchi on pizza. The rant about that actually caused me to discover a new food combo I liked, cause of course I had to do it!)

Kimchi, sweet potatoes, korean bbq etc has been on korean specialty pizzas for a long time. If you go into any koreatown area there's probably a few pizza joints that specialize in k-pizza. Hardly nontraditional if everyone is doing it

Oh, so that SJW didn't even know how Korean food worked?

Hahaha that's even funnier!

Well, I put ketchup on everything meat so I'm sure I still trolled somebody out there somewhere.

Y'know, I could see somebody making a case for the loaded specialty rolls being ~problematic~ or at least warranting a distinction from classical sushi. Because I've eaten at restaurants that had "sushi rolls" containing (among other things), buffalo wings, alligator sausage, ranch dressing, and crumbled potato chips.

Not all in one roll. Just a few ingredients that came to mind. The potato chips were on an eel roll and it was amazing.

I just vomited a little in my mouth. Then I thought about the southwestern 'egg rolls' at Chilis and barfed up the whole enchilada.

The eel/chip roll was the only one I ate. I just remembered seeing that sort of stuff in rolls and going, "wtf." My friend had the buffalo roll and said it tasted like the leftovers that you would eat while hungover after a party- takeout rice and a boneless wing.

Ok, if we're going with that...then everyone with dreads smells like crap.

Re: Dreadlocks and non POC people.

The only thing I have to say about this is, a biracial person can inherit the white parent's skin tone and facial features and the black parent's hair. That's why one apparently white girl I knew had dreadlocks. I don't know why a fully white person would need them, and I kind of do get where people would have a problem with that, but I also wonder how many other "white" people with dreads are actually in the same boat as that girl I knew.

Most of the people I've seen with dreads recently have been most definitely white-girl stoners.

I used to work with a Chinese woman with dreads. I thought they looked good on her.
