You can have manpain when the narrative privileges the male protag's sadness over the trauma of a character who's experienced sexual assault or abduction or torture or serious illness/injury or a brainwipe, too. And while it's most common for the object of the manpain to be a female chararcter, there are examples in which it's a male character instead (often a young boy, e.g. Nate Ford's son in Leverage)...or even an entire planet.
