07. [ WARNING for rape ]

I usually have a high tolerance for rape in fiction, but the way this one was done really... eeeeh, I dunno, it soured me to the rest of the series.

The scene afterwards where the boy was turned on by breast milk was weird too.

The hell?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-06 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
The sorceress raping him was, like, a catalyst for his sexuality or something. A short time afterwards he's talking with a lady who's breast feeding, she hands him an apple, and some of her milk drips onto it, and he's all totally turned on by and fixated with it. Its... weird.

Something like this would affect me, too. I'm sorry, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-05 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for warning me OP. I was thinking of starting this series sometime, but I doubt I will now. I get seriously upset by that stuff. I still vividly remember scenes I read that upset me for weeks and I couldn't seem to mind-wipe them. I try to be really careful now what I read, and knowing this is a big help! *hug*

I hate this series. I really despised the main pairing because I felt like Alec didn't get a chance to develop on his own and it just came off as some gross "grooming" thing. I really wished Alec could've gotten a nice boyfriend his own age. If he'd then ended up together with Seregil, fine, but I felt like it was just foisted on him. I couldn't get over that. I liked the chapter when he was on his own when Seregil was sick.

Alec had relations with other women before getting together with Seregil...

(Anonymous) 2014-12-06 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It's been a while since I read the books, but wasn't the "relations" mostly him going to a brothel?

I'm okay with dubcon and noncon, but only if it's acknowledged as such. It sounds like it wasn't in this case.

Can definitely understand why this bothered you, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-06 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
That's a pretty common problem when men, especially young boys, are raped by women. See also: Don Draper, Oliver Queen, a whole shitload of real-world cases. People will turn themselves inside-out rather than call it rape.

Oh yeah, absolutely. There's that ridiculous rhetoric about it being every boy's dream, and the idea that he couldn't not have liked it. And if he mentions that he didn't like it, then it's a good bet that his masculinity will be called into question.

It's definitely a problem, and one of the manifestations of toxic attitudes regarding rape and gender.

I agree, Alec's rape was grossly mishandled. There used to be a few good fics that addressed it, but I haven't looked for fanworks of it in quite some time.

Between that and how little Seregil ever seemed to pay attention to the thoughts/wants/feelings of his supposed "beloved", yah...I have not managed to pick up the latest two books.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-06 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I think I remember that... Thero? Is that his name? Or is it Alec? Honestly the third book is horribly boring, the fourth is a mess, and the fifth book is nigh unreadable. So honestly stopping after the first book isn't such a bad thing.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-06 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's the point I quit that series at. It wasn't well-written anyway - the only reason people pay it the slightest bit of attention is because it has gay (or bisexual, or whatever) main characters.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-06 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
It's so terribly pretentious too! The author pretends it's superior because there's no elves in it, when her fair folk are just classic Tolkien/D&D elves with another name. Pissed me off. :/

Yeah I had to skim that one, although I *thought/misremembered* it was implied as bad. One of the later books it was worst (the fourth book? or it was the fifth? I think it was fourth) and I haven't bothered checking if there was a 6th after the creepy miniporn stories came out.

Much preferred the Bone Dolls Twin trilogy.

Feel pretty let down though.

Yes! The Bone Dolls trilogy. I would much rather read more about Tamir than the angsty duo. Though, I do remember that I felt the ending was a bit rushed.

Yeah, I think I managed to make excuses for that scene because she asked Alec if he wanted her to stop, but it was basically the magical version of expecting someone tripping on date rape drugs to make sound decisions. And then Seregil makes it worse because he has more issues than National Geographic. Probably the scene was only there to take the creepy edge off Seregil eventually bedding a kid half his age, but it still could have written as...not-assault.

"Half his age"

(Anonymous) 2014-12-06 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Seregil's like 70 and Alec's...something less than 20 when they actually get together.

Half his age would be a vast improvement.

I can understand your being turned off to the rest of the series, but it's really unfortunate, IMHO. I loved the 3rd, 6th, and 7th books best of the series, so that you never got to see them is unfortunate for me.

But I've always wanted more porn in my gay fantasy, and much as I love Lynn's writing--pretentiousness and all--I've read books just as great that give me everything I want in my M/M fantasy fiction.

If you ever feel like trying the series again, skipping ahead to the 6th and 7th likely won't leave you TOO confused I think, and you can skip over all of the baby drama :/

Can you brief me on the main topics in 6 and 7? 4 and 5 really disillusioned me. I looked at the synopsis on wiki but it didn't particularly stand out.

(I don't mind spoilers)

(Anonymous) 2014-12-06 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, these books. I liked her Tamir books and thought the first two Nightrunner books were okay. I remember not caring for the third. Fleweling's rant about J.K. Rowling put me off her books and the back cover copy of the 4th books just put the final nail in the coffin for me.

From what I've heard, I bailed a a good time.

Am I the only one who misread that first one as "Dick in the Shadows" at first glance?
