Balancing Tumblr with Reddit/Imgur

(Anonymous) 2014-12-07 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone else do this?

I browse both sites and basically use them to keep my disgust for the other in check. Every time I get sick of Tumblr's insane sjw bullshit, I head on over to Reddit or imgur for a good dose of old-fashioned misogyny, MRA activism, or hatred of black people (because godDAMN does reddit/imgur hate black people -- holy shit). That way I can at least remind myself that, even though Tumblr has a tendency to take it too far, at least they're fighting something real and pervasive.

No, I don't. I do occasionally go to /pol/ when I really want to yell at some racists (also, it will basically never stop being funny to me that /pol/ accuses reddit of being far too liberal and left-wing). But in terms of consciously balancing the two things, not at all.

Yes, but the opposite way around. When Tumblr gets too SJW for me, I go to look at the people they're complaining about and find that for the most part the average user isn't that bad.

There are a lot of racists on reddit, yea. But there are lots of neo Nazis on Tumblr, too. Both are hardly the majority.

For reddit, though, you'll find misogyny and racism all over the main page whereas I've found that neo-Nazis on Tumblr are much more…fringe.

Like every other day there's the "anti-feminist circle jerk" on imgur. Which is fucking tiring. And the black people jokes which stopped being funny since forever because they were never particularly clever to begin with.

I don't know what you're subscribed to, but I don't see it so much on mine. By the time threads hit the front page all I see are threads going "there are so many racists in this thread" and all the actual racist stuff has been downvoted into oblivion and it's pretty good about cleaning up its own. There is racism and misogyny there, yea. There's a lot of people who are against it as well, too. I don't think of it so much as a misogynist or racist place as a place that must include some misogynists and racists through sheer number because it's so damn huge.

DA Black people jokes need to disappear already. It's the 21st century for God's sake.

Christ, the "this joke was so dark that [insert anti-black stereotype here]" shit is so. Goddamn. Stupid. And they always end up in the top five comments, always.

There was a post a while back going around saying that if you saw someone shoplifting, to not say anything and let them do it. Even/especially if you were a retail worker at that store and on shift.

Like, I don't know where these people are from, but you can get fired for that shit. But I guess the shoplifter getting away with one or two things is more important to that section of Tumblr than the retail worker having a job. (Or being able to get one again, because if you're fired for 'deliberately let a shoplifter get away' there wouldn't be a lot of places keen to hire you.)

i did that a few months ago but i eventually got fed up with tumblr's bullshit and took a hiatus that is still ongoing (possibly forever). i still check my favorite blogs once in a while but i don't ever reblog stuff anymore.
i still go on reddit every day though.

The first time I went to reddit, it was to see all of the terrible things people keep talking about. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that reddit isn't uniformly terrible and it's actually really easy to avoid the parts of it that are.

Also, I avoided tumblr for a long time because of all the terrible things people keep talking about. But then I got into a fandom that was mostly on tumblr and I really wanted to be a part of it, so I signed up. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that tumblr isn't uniformly terrible and it's actually really easy to avoid the parts of it that are.

Basically I'm starting to think people seek out this stuff so they can have something to be angry about.

This always happens to me when I read youtube comments. Haven't sought it out actively though.

I have found a couple of subreddits that are interesting and useful (like stuff on how to declutter your home, how to study, that kind of thing), but as a whole, I'm still wary of reddit.

Re: Balancing Tumblr with Reddit/Imgur

(Anonymous) 2014-12-08 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I avoid tumblr totally and stick to reddit for more moderated content and discussion. Let me give you just a few of the subreddits I normally go on:

/r/ainbow
/r/TrollXChromosomes
/r/rats
/r/herpetology
/r/askhistorians
/r/badhistory
/r/askscience
/r/asktransgender
/r/transpositive
/r/transtimelines
/r/askwomen
/r/actuallesbians
/r/feminism
/r/punchingmorpheus
/r/genderqueer
/r/asexuality
/r/offmychest
/r/randomactsofamazon
/r/randomactsofpizza
/r/sketchdaily

There are plenty of awesome communities of people who are passionate about the same things I am on Reddit. I've found that the average age tends to be higher as does the quality of discussion (and even how easy it is to follow discussion, because tumblr is sort of total rubbish for having a good talk). There are a shitload of positive, friendly and welcoming spaces that are strongly moderated for content and discussion and keep things very safe for everyone who posts there. All reddit is, really, is some kind of way to host a forum. The sort of forums hosted and the people there define themselves, you really can't treat it as a monolithic community and it honestly frustrates me when people do because that basically overlooks all the awesome people in the subreddits listed above who do an amazing job looking out for each other and being super supportive.

Anyway, Tumblr has its good points too. Let's just not slag on anyone, okay? Tumblr is a site for people to run their own blogs, different sort of communities have popped up there. Same with Reddit. Tarring everyone who uses that sort of service with the same brush not only erases people who are actually helping other people but is just making the experience worse for you.

Badhistory is the best. It's the only subreddit I browse with any sort of regularity. There's some hilarious gems in there.

Re: Balancing Tumblr with Reddit/Imgur

(Anonymous) 2014-12-08 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Check out /r/trollxchromosomes if you haven't! Also glorious hilarity and a really fantastic community. I pretty much camp there. While the topics are very different, I've found the /r/badhistory and /r/trollxchromosomes attitudes to be generally similar in terms of how they roll, and it's nice having places like that to go to.

I know a lot of people link /r/TumblrInAction but I actually don't like it there and don't really feel welcome - I think it goes too far off into the other end of 'yeah someone said they were a demigirl once, and that's stupid, so all non-binary genders are stupid' and it's like no... that's not how it works at all... never mind this place then.

Luckily there are plenty of other places that I prefer. If I find somewhere on Reddit I don't like it's easy to just avoid it. It's also really great for fandom discussion and keeping on top of things and what's coming out. Much better than Tumblr since I can just visit a subreddit that's only about the fandom as opposed to go to people's blogs where it's like endless reblogs of unrelated things and various other stuff from god know's where. Believe it or not there's even a fairly active roleplaying community on Reddit, though I don't really do that.

Some good fan communities that I enjoy are /r/marvel, /r/harrypotter (surprisingly hardcore), /r/asoiaf (incredibly discussion heavy), and /r/rpg and /r/dnd. There are others, of course - these are just a few that I've found are really good and right up my alley.

Oh, I'll be sure to do so! Thank you for all of those links above, btw.

Yeah, I feel you on /r/TumblrinAction. It isn't a wecloming place from what I've seem. In fact, the userbase there can sometimes go so far into that end, that it's actually a pretty shitty place. I'm all for mocking and poking fun at ridiculous stuff on tumblr, but it goes a bit too far.

I like that about reddit. You can actually have fandom discussions there. Wait, there's a roleplaying community on there? I didn't know that.

r/asoiaf is great! It has been a while since I've browsed it though. I mostly go there for the ridiculous fan theories, like Bolt-On.

I actually juuuuust started using Reddit after years of being scared off by what I heard about it, and I find it to be okay... must just be the subreddits I visit. But yeah balancing them helps prevent one from being too much.

(because godDAMN does reddit/imgur hate black people -- holy shit).

Let's be honest, which webiste doesn't.

Frankly even though I go on Reddit I take definite care to avoid race subreddits, threads, anything. I just check r/movies, /casualconversation, and a few headlines.
