Re: Do you trust your police?

I do.

The police were the only thing that helped my family have any semblance of peace of mind after 9/11.

Which is why it always pains me when people say "cops are racist!" because the cops were the one thing standing between us and our neighbors.

A lot of cops are racist though...

So are a lot of doctors. And preachers. And Teachers. Do all of them let that affect their job?

Sorry. What's your point?

Quite a few of them do let it affect their job, yes. But the really big point you're missing here is how much damage a racist doctor can cause vs. a racist cop.

Racist doctors can cause a fuckton of damage. Does "Mississippi appendectomy" ring any bells for you?

Sure, but just the blanket condemnation gets to me because when you've had cops protect you from racism, it feels like your experience and their service is being discounted.

A lot of cops =/= all cops. Cops are varied people just like the people in any other profession. Some are okay, some are incompetent, some are malicious, and some are amazing.

This is a "#yes all women" kind of situation: no, not all cops are racist, but yes, almost all black people have been targeted by racist cops so that's cold comfort. Failure to acknowledge this is what leads to all this communication breakdown.

I had a gang of black teenagers that kept breaking into my building and doing drugs/destroying property. Took it to the cops and the very, very white cop at the desk told me there's nothing they could do/they weren't going to do anything. So yeah, not all cops are salivating racist murderers.
