Good series to watch at the gym

[personal profile] chardmonster 2014-12-10 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm finding that watching videos on my phone at the gym is a good way to pass time while bored out of my mind on the elliptical. I was using SnK but I figure anime might not be the best idea--I'm at a gym on campus that faculty occasionally use and screamy anime teens might not present the best image to certain people.

Do you know any good 45 minutes-one hour series that aren't too slow-paced? By slow I just mean episodes without a lot of activity. A slow burn show I only let myself watch during cardio isn't a bad thing.

Avatar/Legend of Korra? Technically a cartoon, but very well-developed and often very grown-up, so it shouldn't be embarrassing to watch (and you can legitimately say you're watching for the political drama). Lots of action in both series, and they're generally ~20-25 minute episodes, so watching two in a row will be about 40-50 minutes.

The only other show I watch that has action in it is Agents of SHIELD. It's pretty fast-paced (especially in the later/more recent episodes), plenty of fight scenes and running around and the like.

One thing you can also try doing is watching an action movie. Just go until the end of your work-out, then pause it, and don't let yourself keep going until your next work-out. That way, when you really just don't want to go do it, you can tap into the irritation of a half-watched movie as motivation to go work-out, anyway. :)

>asks for a non embarrassing show to watch
>reccommends Korra

I mean, Korra's nice and all, but c'mon you can't be that dense to think someone who isn't familar with the show won't make unfavorable assumptions about an adult watching it. You and I know, it's an alright show, but it's incredibly anime-looking and that usually means kid's cartoon or hentai to your average joe.

OP was already watching cartoons at the gym; their primary problem with what they were already watching was "screamy anime teens". And from the sounds of the other comments in the thread, OP is more concerned about their show being heard than seen, in which case people would likely hear a lot of ethical dilemmas and fantasy political drama if they happened to overhear - but not see - anything in the Avatar franchise. Maybe that won't work for OP, but maybe it will. I made a suggestion that approaches their problem a bit more laterally than the other suggestions I made, and I leave it up to OP to figure out if it works for them or if it lacks in the criteria they need.

Watch The Walking Dead and go extra fast every time zombies are on screen.

Pffft haha. Maybe!

Um, watch it anyway? If someone is looking over you shoulder at your phone at the gym of all places, they need to leave the gym. You're there to work out, not judge what people are doing to make their workout more bearable. As long as you're not fangirling while watching it, there is no problem.

Yeah, no. Here's the thing: when I say faculty, I'm not saying "oh no! Maybe the guy who grades my papers will see me watching anime!" I'm a doctoral candidate who works very closely with faculty and also works FOR them as an employee. This is "oh no! My BOSS, who has a very big impact on my professional reputation within and outside this university, might see me watching anime and he has no damn idea what it even is except screaming teenagers with giant eyes! Maybe all he knows is hentai!"

Sometimes "fuck it, I don't care" is not the best approach.

You could watch it with ear buds on? I used to do that while listening to music at the gym. I think now they even have bluetooth headsets.

Are you up for watching comedies? I used to watch Friends while exercising and that helped me.

I like Grimm if you like police procedurals with a fantasy twist.

Another suggestion until you find something might be to watch music videos. I used to download them and set up a playlist.

Good luck!

Breaking Bad, if you haven't already seen it. And I watched the first season while using a stationary bike. I swear that keeping up a good heart rate enhances it.

Also, Person if Interest. It is a "____ o the week" show, but it ties itself together with an overarching and ongoing borderline scifi plot. The first six eps are rough, but by the time you hear "Elias" it'll have found its stride.

None.

If you're actually working out your hardest you shouldn't be able to focus on a show.

And who the fuck said I was? But anyway:

>If you're actually working out your hardest you shouldn't be able to focus on a show.

I don't know man, working out so hard I cannot possibly understand the plot of a fucking cartoon seems pretty much impossible to me. I've been able to focus on song lyrics in a crossfit class. But sure, keep showing off for whoever here cares.

>Crossfit

Well there's your first problem.

But this isn't boasting bruv, basic input. If you're fidning yourself able to focus on and take in episodes of a show, consider mixing up your routine and asking for input from staff members. I'm sure they'd be more then happy to help.

I used to time my gym visits around when Doctor Who would be on TV. There was a while a few years ago when they were showing David Tennant era episodes on PBS at 6:00 PM. It was great, and the pace really worked for me.
