Yeah, probably because MCU Clint has 0 personality. He had like 3 lines in Thor and he spent most of Avengers mind controlled.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. His character in the movies can be summed as "duuuuuurrrrr". He's a mobile prop, not a character. I hope they stuff him in a fridge somewhere and bring in a better character.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
...or maybe you should actually give him a chance in age of ultron (since its been reported that that aou is going to focus on Hawkeye a lot more) instead of instantly just wanting him to die...? I mean wow lol overreaction much.

Anyways yeah Clint's lack of character in Avengers is kinda annoying, especially in fic and fanart when he's written as stoic and serious, even though in the comics he's litterally the complete opposite of that.

Yeah, and this is why he's also one of the hardest characters to write. How do ou write a correct version of a personality that hasn't really been touched upon very much in canon?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
+1

Movie Clint is forgettable. Comics Clint isn't.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I gotta disagree there. The writers didn't do much with him, but Jeremy did a great job portraying him as a sarcastic but well meaning guy.

The truth has been written. Even when they brought him out of that mind controlled stupor his personality still began and ended with 'Budapest' and shooting arrows.
nightscale: Starbolt (Marvel: AoU Wanda)

[personal profile] nightscale 2014-12-11 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, this is the entire reason right here. Which is why I'm kind of hoping AoU will give us more to go on for his character, but who knows?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, pooh on you for this sentiment and on everyone who agrees with it. I don't agree so I'm just going to go sulk over here.

[personal profile] astridv 2014-12-11 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was gonna say, it's not like canon gave us that much material to work with. It's gonna be different after AoU (I hope!)

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know. There's some character there, it's just mostly by implication, and the bulk of it is secondhand from Natasha. It's still reasonably potent, though. "He made a different choice." That's a whole lot of character right there, in five words. The fact that he didn't kill her and, in a world where that kind of weakness should have got him killed, it made her listen to him instead, that also says a fair bit. And there was some onscreen personality as well. The opening scene of Avengers, where Clint gives the debrief to Fury on Selvig, I think it says a bit about Clint that in a room full of boffins and big-scale thinkers, he was the one who figured out that gates could be opened from both sides.

Yeah, it's really not a lot to go on, and Clint is probably about the least interesting of the movieverse characters, with the bulk of his characterisation actually being sort of reflected onto him by Natasha's reactions to him. But if you're writing him and like me you haven't read the comics, there is enough to at least sketch him out just from the movieverse.

Pretty much. Half the time I don't remember he's actually a character in the movies. Utterly forgettable.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Considering MCU Hawkeye doesn't have much a character to begin with it's somewhat understandable..

Echoing what the others said. People might complain about Natasha not having her own movie, but at least she has a character.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I have NO knowledge of Comics!Clint, but frankly, MCU Hawkeye has the personality of oatmeal. He's almost a blank slate, you could graft anything onto him because there's so little personality there to clash with any potential changes you'd care to make.

[personal profile] lentils 2014-12-11 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, like everyone else has already pointed out, MCU!Clint doesn't have a "character" so to speak. Except maybe being a little snarky? He snarked at Coulson in Thor? That's about it, honestly. His "personality" is srsface, occasional snark and arrows. I'm hoping AOU will give him more to do, but at this point if I don't throw in some of his comics canon doofiness then I can't write him.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
What, comics version of him is doofy? I think I'd actually like that if that made its way into the movies.

I think he got his chance to shine in the battle with the aliens.

He clearly is not comics!Clint though.

[personal profile] cloud_riven 2014-12-11 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah. I know the only reason I liked him was all to do with Jeremy Renner playing him (combined with how much I liked him in The Unusuals). He's a perfect blank slate if you don't read comics, so why not transplant one over the other.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I love comics!Clint, even if I don't always find it easy.

And I loved Renner's detective in The Unusuals. So I want to like movie!Hawk, but he's a really different character.

Jeremy Renner in The Hurt Locker for me, but then again that is one of my all time favourite movies...

And I hope you know that you are now to blame for me rewatching The Unusuals, again....

I'm baffled by the idea that what fandom does with Clint is anything even remotely connected to canon of any kind.

They treat him like a helpless, emotional sponge who literally can't feed himself or function as a human being. Even Fraction isn't THAT bad.

What comics are you reading??

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
There is fandom beyond the kink meme and woobie!Clint.
