That's pretty hilarious. In a sort of sad way.

I did some raw scans for a very niche manga with a teeny fandom. Well, it's sort of two fandoms, one in English, the other another the language. I remember being *so* pissed off when the other fandom posted a colorization of a panel that was obviously posted by me, but with no acknowledgment of my contribution. (And if you think it's easy to just get a hold of tankobon in the original Japanese, then scan things so they come out right, you're wrong. Scanning is a friggin'art!)

Anyhoo I was growling about it until my Mom overheard me and said, "You *want* to be praised for stealing?" And that kind of put it into perspective for me.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
...But it's common courtesy in fandom to acknowledge a source when it isn't something easily obtained, like magazine scans. Even if just to say, "found these on weibo".

Fandom has bee praising 'stealing' for years; it's how things work. Your mom sounds old and/or like she's never been in fandom. It's not praising an illegal act to acknowledge that someone else has spent their time and money to bring you something for free.

OP.

:)

And IA it's the polite thing to give recognition for people's contributions to fandom, especially when it's difficult to do the scans and not just screenshotting a DVD or whatevs. But enforcing that recognition by ruining the image with watermarks is just feh. Especially since the watermarker does not own the rights to the image. It strikes me as presumptuous as well as being visually gross.

It's a lot harder to do magazine scans though. You have to buy the manga, scan it, clean it, etc.

Taking a screencap takes two seconds.

Scanning and cleaning definitely takes skill. But then, for me, the scan is a basically worthless once a big fat watermark gets plastered on it. That colorist thing is annoying too. If only because they're not just using the artist's line work, but your scan that made it use able in the first place.

...I just feel obligated to point out that VLC Media Player is free to download, works on lots of platforms, plays almost any video file...and will take screenshots without watermarks. There's no reason to settle for shareware that plasters its logo over everything.

Yup. VLC is perfect for everything. It is the only video player I use anymore.

OP. This is a batch watermark program she runs on the image files after she's already taken the screenshots. She's doing it deliberately just to insert her watermark. It inserts its own watermark because she hasn't paid for the shareware. So she'd be stiffing them, too, except she's doing their advertising with every screenshot.

Except if you want to cap Blurays but don't use cracking software. :(

I would have assumed the people adding the third and fourth watermarks were just being silly.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
OP. Not that I can tell, since these same people without irony watermark their tumblr blog address on everything they've touched even a little.

I should really stay off tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's pretty ridiculous. (I write fic, and I have this one series that a couple of people have enjoyed enough to want to write something in the same "universe." They asked me if I'd be pissed if they did so. Even if I had been, I'd have been ashamed to say "No! You can't write fanfic of my fanfic!")

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
OP. That's really exciting! I mean, I'd be a little worried they'd mess things up, but at the same time, it's really flattering. Good for you. And good for you too in letting go the reins. That's hard, but IA.

It strikes me as funny and messed up that people actually do that.

I'm just cracking up imagining like, a wank report where the various watermarkers get outed and throw hissy fits at each other. I'd bet anything that at least the fourth one was trolling.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
OP. Not in the one case I'm talking about, since that fourth user watermarks pretty much everything she posts to her tumblr. But there have definitely been some of them I've looked crossways at that had to be jokes.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I can kind of understand how people might want gifs or screenshots or scans to be credited to them, as even if it's not their property there can still be a lot of work involved in up keeping fandom sites/blogs. Whether that means they should watermark it or not, I don't know for sure.

But I do agree the amount of watermarking that goes on can be ridiculous. I get especially pissed off at those sites that put their watermark on things they just find on the web, especially when they do it to MY ART. And when I say my art, I mean something I drew myself, even if it's fanart it still makes me mad (I don't even care if people put my art on their sites, I just want to be credited and I don't want someone else's ugly ass watermark on my stuff unless I gave them permission to do so.)

The Tumblr culture of "owning" gifs and screencaps of other people's artwork is stupid as hell. In the situation you're talking about, why don't any of these idiots just download VLC and take their own screens?

That annoys me too, OP. There's a blog in my fandom that lifts pictures straight from the stars' Instagram accounts and plasters their URL on all of them. Like, really? You want credit for knowing how to right-click and save? I refuse to reblog their shit but I also can't be bothered to get on Instagram myself, so I'm stuck looking at their ugly logo.
