Yeeeeeah. That's a slippery slope right there, anon. NGL, when I got out of SPN Wincest fandom and stopped reading incest it felt like a weight had been lifted off me. I hadn't even realised how much it had been fucking with my head until I quit it.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-13 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
OMG fuck yes. It's not even like I was even all that interested in it in the first place, but SPN fandom is like being in a bubble where these things get normalized because everyone is doing it, (and the porn is really very hot, which makes it harder to resist), until you feel like not liking incest is homophobic and immature and prudish and closed-minded and Sam/Dean is really just like any other slash pairing just because they love each other. That weird mental space that happens when you're in the bubble is creepy as hell.

Not that, you know, enjoying incest or finding incest hot is creepy as hell -- just that the swiftly collapsing lack of perspective that comes with being in that bubble is creepy as hell. IMO there's a distinction.

Look at it this way: It's a kink like any other. You don't "ship" them irl, you just like reading about them together. Even RPF isn't really them, it's personalities the author has given them. Don't beat yourself up about it too much.

Brother/girl/brother fic I could handle, but incest... nah, man. But you should read that fic if it appeals to you, nothing wrong with that.

I's totally could get into being the middle of a Hemsworth sandwich, though I'm not sure how I'd feel about them elaborately doing stuff to eachother. I love the sight of two gorgeous guys together, but the incest thing...yeah, still bothers me.

It actually seems like brother/girl/brother and sister/boy/sister are really common (and normal?) fantasies irl, which is slightly odd to me considering how squicky most people irl find incest.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong/dangerous about what you're reading, but what you're feeling doesn't sound good for your mental health. It does remind me of the Wincest "bubble" mentioned upthread––you get led around by your clit for long enough, and eventually you start losing perspective. It's a very creepy feeling. You might benefit from taking a break from reading fic (or at least from reading porn) to give your brain time to get detached from your junk. That often helps me when I'm in similar situations.

I find the comments in this thread really weird. oO If you get off on it, you get off on it. That's perfectly okay and no reason to feel uncomfortable. There's no "weird creepy bubble" involved. Most people feel uncomfortable for a while when they realise they're into something they weren't into before, and then the healthy thing is to get over that irrational discomfort.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-13 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Anon above said it gave them a weird creepy feeling being in that bubble and you think it's okay, in the face of that statement, to say there's no "weird, creepy feeling"? That's pretty goddamned nervy of you to dismiss someone else's statement of fact like that, about their own feelings.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-13 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
There doesn't necessarily have to be a weird creepy bubble -- you can just get off on incest as a kink. But if you're distressed by the fact that you keep reading porn that you don't like and which you disagree with and the only reason you keep reading is because you're in a weird enabling feedback loop that screws up your perspective, rather than healthily indulging a kink, that's bad.

It is a thing that happens you know. We hear a lot about guys who get addicted to porn and keep obsessively seeking out creepier and more hardcore porn because they're in a mental porn bubble - which doesn't mean every guy who watches porn does it that way. There's no reason it can't apply to smutty fanfic too. There's certainly enough of it and it's certainly psychologically powerful enough.

Not necessarily about incest, but there is definitely a danger of getting sucked into a kink you don't even like, because the first fic you read for it hit another kink you do have along the way, or it was particularly well written, or all your friends are into it, or it's the first smut you came across and you don't know better.

The relief of getting out of it has nothing to do with the kink itself, just that it was never really your thing.
