But this doesn't stop you from enjoying the characters as they were originally intended, does it?

Or is it that nobody does that, and everyone just cutesies them? Because I can see how that would make you sad.

Well, that's tumblr, innit

(Anonymous) 2014-12-13 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Tumblr makes it really easy to spread this stuff, but the cuteification of twisted, scary characters has been around for much longer than that. Adorable Pyramid Head, anyone?

Hey, if anyone finds me trying to do this to the Secret Weapons, hit me.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-13 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

Anthromorphizations have so much potential, but people love to make them cute pretty girl/guy no. 15327904 instead.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-13 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Especially the ones that immediately go the "white blond haired pretty boy" route.

I'm not hugely in the GF fandom but the fact that 90% of Bill Cypher humanizations are just pretty looking skinny white boys with eyepatches is really aesthetically frustrating.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-13 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Who are they?

[personal profile] comradesmiler 2014-12-13 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Top left clockwise:
1.) Notepad and clock, Don't hug me I'm scared
2.) Some guy from Night Vale, I don't care
3.) Bill Cypher, Gravity Falls

(Anonymous) 2014-12-13 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
To finish out the reference for those who do care, #2 is Cecil Palmer, host of Welcome to Night Vale. (Looking nothing like the voice actor who plays him, though that's arguably not important.)

I'm not defending the one on the bottom, but upper left looks kind of cool, and I like upper right's tats.

(If there's one thing I hate, it's what they do to the Batter from OFF. Oy vey.)

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2014-12-13 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
why they gotta do that to Bill Cipher tho ;.;

(Anonymous) 2014-12-13 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah same and i know lots of others who would agree, don't worry OP

(Anonymous) 2014-12-14 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm ashamed to say how fascinated I am by the Tumblr versions of those stupid puppets...mostly the fact that it was so popular at one point. I mean, why do puppets need to be made "hot"?

(I'm even more ashamed to say how much I secretly enjoy them. I know there is so much wrong with that, and I've never been so embarrassed by any of my fandom interests.)

(Anonymous) 2014-12-14 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's true tho.

I hate how they're designed as so effortlessly stylish when it doesn't even fit the canon (*coughWTNVcough*)
sabotabby: (doom doom doom)

[personal profile] sabotabby 2014-12-14 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh God WTNV especially. I don't care if people want to make Cecil traditionally handsome, though that's not how I picture him, but his horrible weird fashion sense is canon and it delights me and it makes me sad whenever people draw him all stylish.

i think they draw them that way because they already wanna fuck the triangle and the clock n stuff

I get where you're coming from. It wouldn't bother me if it was 'some people draw characters this way and some people don't', but it gets to me when *every* character it happens with falls into 'hot, skinny, young and with very similar styling', and those designs become codified within the fandoms to the point where it can be difficult to find other designs. Cecil you can often find other interpretations of, even if the volume isn't always as great, and I don't want to tell anyone how they can and can't visually interpret a character, but...

I don't know, it wouldn't hurt to see more older/less skinny/less 'hip'/less traditionally hot character designs... To me it's not that those designs exist, it's having a hard time finding anything that isn't prettied-up.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-14 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
It does get repeititve after awhile.

I remember when Welcome to Night Vale started and there was so many interesting interpretations. Then the whole 'blonde with glasses and sweaters' design caught on and so far that's all I've seen since then.

[personal profile] were_lemur 2014-12-14 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
It's a radio show, and people are free to imagine what the character looks like. But instead, people copy from each other and create this bland, generic dude who wouldn't be out of place behind the counter at Starbucks.
dysmaid: (Default)

[personal profile] dysmaid 2014-12-14 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I feel you. It's frustrating because once fandom seizes onto the "hot, vaguely alternative white guy" version of a character, there's no getting away from it. Especially on Tumblr - if people are drawing weirder, more imaginative interpretations, they're definitely not getting notes and making the rounds. Seems like a waste.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-14 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Am I seriously the only one who doesn't find this style of art "hot?"

Off topic, but I saw a Cecil cosplayer who was about 7', slightly wavy brown hair down past the small of his back, ripped and scruffy. He looked like a Norse god in a sweatervest.

It's shallow, but I could get behind that prettying up of Cecil.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-14 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
why do people wanna fuck that triangle in the first place tho.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-15 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
You do sound 2edgy, especially when none of those canons are super unnerving to begin with. And you miss the point of why people do it.
