In every MCU movie to a certain extent, KlK has male sexualisation as well, some comics, quite a few anime (Free, for example), there's a whole literary genre focused on writing ~super hawt~ guys hooking up with the stand-in-for-the-reader main character etc etc

MCU is full of male power fantasy. Like, seriously, they're just incidentally hooking women. (See: why there's little no no Black Widow on merchandising.)

Free is the only anime that comes to mind, KLK literally has the males as side characters, and that literary genre is seen as a joke.

Tell me it's equal. Just tell me.

You need to watch more anime then, there are many shows with sexualized men. Evangelion, Utena, Fate/Zero, Orenchi no Furo Jijou, even G Gundam has a lewd shot of Domon's ass every time he gets in the robot.

Which is one of the many reasons why G Gundam is best Gundam. God, I love that shot of his ass so much.

>that literary genre is a joke
>not anime tho

Sure, the "random shirtless Thor" (just one example) is a total Male Power Fantasy and not at all in there to get the female viewers a bit twitchy in their seats, nu-uh. You wanted to know if the men were sexualised: Yes, they are. Black Widow does not have anything to do with it.

Free is not the only anime like that. Not even by far. Just think Ouran High School Host Club and all those reverse harem anime there are tons of it. And it doesn't matter if KLK has then male characters as side characters, since I'm pretty sure you'd be pissed at female side characters being sexualised as well.

And it doesn't fucking matter if that literary genre is "seen as a joke" (hint - it isn't by a lot of women), it doesn't change the fact that all the covers are full of very overtly sexualised guys.

And I never said they are equally sexualised. But they're also not even remotely as un-sexualised as you think.

Okay, so since anime is fair game, other asian media should be fair game as well. I give you: The entire J-Pop/K-Pop boygroup industry.

DA

Bollywood needs a mention too.

Superhero movies are male power fantasies, not sexualized for the female viewing audience. I mean, maybe if Batman fought crime with nothing by some bat speedos and some magical armor body oil that made him immune to bullets, but showed off a chiseled tanned chest, then MAYBE.

Sure, all those camera angles on Cap's ass and tight outfits he wears or shirtless Thor scenes are just there for men to enjoy.

You can make the argument that comics are all about male power fantasies, but the MCU is blatantly about fanservice geared towards women.

Uh, yeah, actually. The male characters are typically there for male audience members to live through

A shit ton of women appreciate the half naked male characters being filmed in a sexual and exploitative angle, but somehow that's all negated because some dudes might project themselves onto them? What is your idea of male fanservice anyway, men being tied up and helpless?

Re: DA

Target audience is the problem. Those scenes are largely for the male gaze and incidentally pleasing to the female gaze.

I mean, I can find objectified women hot all I want, doesn't change that their target is heterosexual men.

Why do dudes want shirtless men?

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2014-12-16 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
wat. What straight dude wants gratuitous shots of shirtless men or man ass? It seems like you're looking for a reason to not consider that fanservice for women.

Re: DA

I think the issue is the fact that while, yes, those particular scenes in MCU are likely directed at women as you say, the movies in their entirety are not. In their entirety, they are male power fantasies that happen to contain some eye candy for women. In fanservicey anime the women EXIST to be eye candy. It's not the same thing as a few scenes in an otherwise, male-centric movie.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2014-12-16 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
Just because the entire movie isn't shirtless guys doesn't make it any less fanservice. It's the same the other way too. Movies that sexualize women aren't just about that, right? There is still a plot or other characters going on. You can't just cherry pick.

Sometimes I think people just say women are more sexualized because they think women should hide their bodies and act like they don't have sexuality at all. Literally nobody ever complains when a sweaty guy takes of his shirt to reveal his muscular body when he's working on the engine in his car. I've seen scenes like that too many times to count.

This! A lot about super heroes being fit and muscled has to do with male power fantasy. But with the way they're filmed in the MCU there is also intentional female-gaze fanservice.

Well, not in the examples cited in the secret, though.
