For men, yes. For women no.

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jsm.12734/abstract

Gist of the study: certain sexual fantasies (including bdsm) are common- therefore they likely don't say a lot about a person's individual character. Also, men generally want their sexual fantasies realized while women generally do not.

So, what you're saing, is we should get our F!S gs to so a "poll" about our preferences.

That would certainly be an interesting poll.

If you have pay-wall access: what countries did the respondents come from? Certain fantasies might not say a lot about individual character, but they might have something to say about a particular culture.

It was an internet survey, so participants presumably only needed to understand English in order to contribute.

Participants being able to understand English cuts out some places; likelihood of internet access cuts out others; and the survey's distribution would cut out still others. I'm also betting they probably had a "where are you from" question in there somewhere; demographics are pretty important when it comes to this kind of research.

I dunno. I just think there's mitigating factors when it comes to fantasies and preferences, and that culture is probably one of those factors. I'd be interested in seeing a study that specifically compares fantasies between countries/across cultures.

Is that a thing? I have never heard that one.

It doesn't really make sense to me. What's the point of having a fantasy if it isn't something you want? I've never fantasized about something I didn't want. Maybe some elements of it might have been fantastical, or sometimes me creating a bad situation in order to make a setting for something I wanted, but the thing itself was always something I would like happening to me.

Then again, I'm not very good at abstract thinking (something women are supposed to be good at?).

...and now this is yet another exhibit on why I hate gender generalizations

ETA: I am really NOT trying to shit on how other women fantasize and I realized this could seem a lot like that. I was just sharing my own thought process

Derailing, because this interests me

I generally don't fantasize about things happening to me, but I would certainly hope a lot of (nonsexual) fantasies that people have are things they don't really want. For instance, a lot of people seem to have a fantasy of zombies destroying civilization, with themselves as the few people who survive and are subsequently free to kill zombies to their hearts' content. I don't think most people would say that they really, honestly want zombies to destroy civilization--it's just a radical break from the mundanity of their lives, and I guess it's worthwhile to put aside your daily concerns for a time. Maybe sexual fantasies aren't so different from that.
