You're talking about the discussion on Sera, aren't you? That's been all over my dash and... Yeah.

(DA fandom is very very annoying at times)

(Anonymous) 2014-12-20 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Keeping out of the fandom after the great Anders/Fenris war of aa few years back, but I need to know:

WHAT THE FUCK PROBLEM DO THIS DOOLIES HAVE WITH SERA? DO THEY WANT ME TO EAT THEIR CHILDREN?!?!

(Anonymous) 2014-12-20 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Well, you see, Sera's problematic. She calls Vivienne "a bitch", Cole "it" and some transman at the Orlesian ball "she". Granted not nice things to say, but not everything has to be nice. She also doesn't like the Dalish, and tumblr gets up and arms about the Dalish (and I say this as someone who likes Dalish). And this is a problem, because she represents lesbians. ???

As far as I can tell, as a bored onlooker, they (some) have more problem with Sera's writer than Sera, since he's a dude and the same dude who wrote Aveline (her and Isabela's interactions fall into the not-nice category). There's like this campaign to re-claim Sera, which is basically explaining her nasty attitudes and her learning that calling Cole "it" is not cool (as if she's the only one who does that).

Basically "Compare how a straight man wrote Sera (a lesbian woman) to how a gay man wrote Dorian (a gay man).

It's all messy and I don't caaaaaaaaaaare. Also, lest we forget Dorian has some pretty not-nice attitudes on slavery, but those are never touched upon (except one post I saw which was like "but imagine Dorian against slavery", well fuck you I think it's interesting).

TL;DR: Sera shouldn't be mean. Because she's lesbian??

(I probably could have explained that better, but I skimmed over most of the posts)

I think nothing kills the mood of any narrative more than when characters get out the tumblr SJW lingo (word by word) even though they wouldn't know about that in the universe they're in/it doesn't fit the setting even in the slightest.

some transman at the Orlesian ball "she"

Oh, fuck. Dealbreaker. Fuck Sera.

I'm depressed now. One of my favorite characters has in the space of one post become my most hated.

AYRT

Sorry to break it you, anon. :(

(Anonymous) 2014-12-20 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't have to be sorry. it's the peice of shit who wrote her that should be sorry.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-20 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)

Really, now? Gaider is likely very very aware that's not a cool thing to do, so yeah, it was a conscious decision to have her do that regardless. Sera is a damaged, immature and irreverent character, completely on purpose. She's not politically correct and nor is she meant to be, which IMO makes her interesting.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Her writer was Kristjanson, not Gaider, but yeah it was pretty obviously meant to be not a cool thing.

Ahh, gotcha. Guess I've just read too many comments blaming Gaider for everything ever, including Sera. :p

(Anonymous) 2014-12-20 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, anon. I've been really down about it too, I liked her a lot. It doesn't help that everyone is pointing and laughing at people who are hurt by it and saying it's 'oversensitive'.

yeah sera is... not very kind

which is very much a shame because i went into the game expecting to love her. i didn't realise the writers had opted to make her a nonsensical, insensitive, hurtful mess. very much disappointed with her character

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, but do you have a link to the comment at the Orlesian ball? I took Sera to the ball with me in-game and either didn't get or didn't notice that comment. And I'm pretty sure it's the kind of comment I would have noticed,

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
are you trans?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is that relevant? You don't have to be trans to dislike transphobia.

I have not witnessed it myself. My comment was basically just summarizing what Sera-discussion I've seen on my dashboard.

After a quick googling I got this: "Crotch rot. Beats his squire. He's a she. Has a bastard. Extra toes."

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Well that's thoroughly inconclusive. I was genuinely worried, but this really is nothing. Fucking tumblr.

Fucking tumblr.

I agree. :P

I cannot believe the same person who wrote Aveline wrote Sera. I am aghast. I LOVE Aveline, but I wanted to punt Sera off a building.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure you're supposed to want to punt Sera off a building. She's the one character you never lose the option to kick the hell out of the Inquisition, so they clearly knew going in that some players would loathe her.

(He was also the lead writer for Carver in DA2, so 'abrasive character you'll either love or loathe, but won't be indifferent to unless you never talk to them' is something he's done before.)
miarrow: (DA2 : pansexual lady pirate Isabela)

[personal profile] miarrow 2014-12-21 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
I LOVE CARVER. Carver has layers! Sera is just... annoying and immature. It makes me really uncomfortable you can romance her. She acts like she's ten the entire time. I liked the concept of Sera, but the execution was so utterly childish and there was no growth whatsoever (then again, I think maybe Cole and Cassandra were the only companions who actually felt like they had real growth arcs).

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Sooo... there can't be arsehole characters. Nope, never. Cool.

I'd love some horrible, horrible representations for my minority! My fav character is nor really vile, but a sarcasm central - Jeff from Mass Effect. Don't know any other examples of not-martyr disabled fictional people :< .

So they didn't elaborate anything on Dorian's stance on slavery? That's disappointing - I mean he's a Tevinter mage, he probably has some skewed ideas even if he's learning to overcome them.

Aveline and Isabella interactions were ... odd for me. Totally out of character for them both. I guess, they had an immature phase? Dunno, I love them both, so it was WTF.
