Yeah, I've had the impression sometimes that Tumblr folks go out of their way to find something to get offended about and wank over because they have to find a way to dump on cishet shitlords.

Even it if just ends up clearly looking like just wanting to be offended for the sake of it.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-20 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree.

Not with the thrust of your point, just it's destination.

If you'll allow me to make an amendment I would say that I've had the impression sometimes that folks go out of their way to find something to get offended about and wank over because they have to find a way to dump on other people so that they can feel superior and better live with the horrible unjust things that swim through their own hearts.

idk if it's because i surrounded myself with a bunch of cullen stans but i've found the fandom to be pretty great

Where are you hanging out? I've been visiting the Dragon Age tags on tumblr pretty often lately but mostly I see gifs and cute fanart...not a lot of in-depth discussion, complaining or wank. Now if you visit the BSN...yea, you'll see a bit of everything, but idk. Despite the faults DA has always been one of my favorite fandoms.

That said, one of the things I like most about Dragon Age is the cast, and I don't mind that they aren't perfect. Not gonna lie and say I love everyone, but they certainly feel more real to me than many other game characters; I consider that a good thing.

Yeah, I'm a bit surprised to hear someone having a hard time in DA fandom, because the parts of it I frequent are very friendly. Well, except for the BSN. I poked my head in there once or twice and had absolutely no desire to go back.

You're fortunate. There are a few pockets of the tumblr fandom that are incredibly toxic, and they'll occasionally swarm out of their home territory to smear shit on someone(s) they decide are objectively evil for liking/disliking a particular character, or not subscribing to their own personal headcanons.

Same as everyone - never seen any drama besides this on F!S :D (usually with Anders secrets).

Everyone has so MANY problems in these games ..., plenty of hypocrites running around. That is why I like most characters D: . Hell, I'll give an example - I headcanon Fenris as an alcoholic, since that is my addiction as well. Even wrote about that - seriously, no one battered an eyelash.

Since the death of LJ, I'm also mostly on tumblr. Guessing that there's some drama on Nexus Mods with modifying sexuality (seen it mentioned, never encountered) for the recent game (haven't played yet). Dunno why, mods like these, making everyone bi, existed in Origins.

What I find so curious about these people, is the seem to bitch about franchises that actually TRY very hard to do well, and have minor problems.

While you seem to get very little personal criticism of things that are just all-out shit at representation in any way. Sure you get them under the umbrella of "problems with mainstream media" but still.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-20 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the Macklemore thing. It's easier and more rewarding to shit on people who're more likely to listen to you and take your rain of shit to heart.

Why would you want to shit on someone wearing the raincoat of not giving a fuck?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-20 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's because they're interested in and like the things that try, so those are the things they're familiar with, and when they're looking to critique something, well...they turn to what's familiar and they know the most about.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-20 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's like that quote about how male kindness is so alien to women that it is indistinguishable from seduction. Maybe these marginalised communities are so unused to the mainstream trying to be kind to them that any failing seems indicative of more sinister motives? Like how LGBT Positive media get's called out on queer baiting?

If this is about the kerfluffle over Sera, then I don't think I can agree. As a "gay lady" myself, I think her writer is AWFUL and it really shows in her character. He completely pissed away her potential, and in a really terrible way.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-20 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not just since Inquisition. The kink meme is a good example as well: There have been a lot of wanks started and prompts/fills deleted because of ~problematic~ shit and hurt feefees. Usually because of things that were ridiculous and not even a little offensive.

I haven't played it and I stay away from the fandom - both because I can't stand the fandom and because of spoilers - but I think this whole "must always be perfect" attitude when it comes to minority characters really hurts some realistic character development and takes lots of options away from those characters that could make then better written characters than they are. Sure, when the writing sucks in general, everything is for naught, but I personally am bored to tears of oh so perfect characters.

And it's time that people on tumblr understood that your SJW brownie points don't mean anything when you're an asshole.

yes, welcome to the bioware fandom, where people are either unreasonably sensitive or unreasonably insensitive

there are a few key issues/characters that really drive wedges in the fandom, especially with anders and cullen, and the mage-templar thing as a whole. most people either hate anders or defend every little thing he did, and the same goes for cullen, despite the fact that both of these characters are pretty decently rounded, show tons of character growth and struggle with their own issues throughout the games. people just see what they want to see, and it usually depends on whether they prefer mages or templars. i would just stay away from the overzealous ones if i were you. generally people who talk about those issues will talk about them incessantly every single day.

eta: this obviously depends on the issue(s) you're referring to because the thing with sera being awful is entirely justified in my opinion. though there is another thing with sera that is frequently discussed and that is her race, her concept art gave her darker skin (and only in some of the sketches) and a lot of fans assume that darker skin = not white so they accused the developers of whitewashing her final appearance in the game, which i don't think is reasonable honestly.

Tumblr Bioware fandom is unfortunately awful. But between it and BSN, I can stomach its bullshit a little easier.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
As someone else who's just joined the Dragon Age fandom, that surprised me, too. I was all 'wow my character can have serious same-sex romances that's so great', and then I started looking around to see what other fans had to say, and a bunch of people are complaining because you can't have same-sex romances with every single character, or because you can't have polyamorous romances, or because they think a larger portion of the bisexual characters are morally grey compared to the straight ones. I'd expected that people would be praising BioWare for being inclusive, not condemning them for not being even more inclusive.

Meanwhile, I'm just pathetically happy that my male Warden can romance Zevran and everybody else in the party is cool with it (well, not everybody, but that's more to do with the whole assassin thing).

I have trouble with this, because on the one hand, I think a lot of the characters and fan behaviors ARE problematic, and I find nothing wrong with believing that an organization known for being fairly progressive should be held to very high standards. But like, we should also remember that they make a solid good faith effort and have responded positively to change in the past, and it's worth remembering that when we make critiques? So yeah, if Bioware had only ever made one queer character (I assume that's what this is about), then they need to take very good care about how that character is represented. But since they routinely incorporate queer characters with a pretty good variety of personalities, some of those characters should be a bit unsavory, since they're people. This isn't to say people can't be upset by Sera's transphobic remarks or that they're wrong to call out her writer and/or Bioware for it, but the people who act like a queer character must also be flawless are sort of missing the point, imo. But again, so are the people who see the reasonable arguments and rage about oversensitivity. I don't know, this comment is probably very pointless and reeking of "why can't we all just get aloooong?"

Holy shit, anon, YES. I have a friend who literally is offended at almost everything about this game, yet won't stop playing it. I mean, she goes on about how fiction is her escape from things in real life that are already oppressing her, but honestly? If you water down fiction until it's nothing but wish fulfillment, it's not even the same genre anymore. She needs to find another game to play and not expect a realistic setting to cater to holding her hand over everything. It's made me really not even know how to talk to her, and I've got a horrible distaste for this fandom now without even ever getting into it. Although I admit, it makes me WANT to play the games now even if I am not even into big games like that anyway. But it's definitely NOT because I'm too delicate to handle a realistic story with characters full of depth and character flaws.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-22 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
This is why SJWs are a cancer on fandom and need to be exterminated on sight.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-24 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a long time Dragon Age fan and I just have to say this secret is spot on. I agree 100%

In particular, the hate and bashing of Sera and her writer by the SJWs drives me crazy. She is a nuanced and realistic character who is a bigot and has personality flaws. They say it's offensive because she is a lesbian but her flaws have nothing to do with her sexual orientation. It's not like she's an offensive stereotype. She is realistic and flawed. Dragon Age is amazing but the fandom is the actual worst.
