Meanwhile, I think people who hold up the original as OMG AMAZING!!! are entirely enamored based on childhood nostalgia. It's not even that good and is a typical "Villain is evil because they couldn't comprehend what the Good People though until he tried to ruin it and then they Taught Him Better" story.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-20 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
My goodness. You are filled with the spirit of suck. I'll bet you're a ray of sunshine in RL too.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-20 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
is that any different from the people who think the 2000 grinch is good. i doubt there are hordes of people over 25 that enjoy it.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-20 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? Are you saying that people under 25 are incapable of enjoying clever word play, good animation and a story witha simple but powerful message? In which case, that's very sad.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-20 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I never said I even liked the new one. I just don't see why people hold the old one up as THE MOST AMAZING THING EVAR!!! when it's clearly nostalgia glasses.

Two words- Boris Karloff

Two more words: Chuck Jones.

[Also, from what I'd read of the feature film, it turns at least part of the moral on its head by having the Whos be a bunch of materialistic shits-- even if they too learn the lesson at the end. I'll give it this, though: Rick Baker did a fine job of making regular humans look like Seuss characters!]

(Anonymous) 2014-12-20 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually the message is one of antimaterialism. Christmas isn't about stuff it's about coming together and celebrating the joy of the season.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-20 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I never got that from it. The Grinch wasn't materialistic, and the people of Whoville went on with their merry way regardless of the things.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-20 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The Grinch thought if he stole the Whos' stuff then they would cancel their celebration because it was all about presents and a big feast. They woke up to stripped houses and celebrated anyway because they still had each other.

Moral of the story: you don't need a bunch of stuff to have a Merry Christmas.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-20 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
That's... A pretty stupid reading of it. He stole their stuff because that's what he thought it was about because he literally did not understand Christmas until the Whos came out and started celebrating regardless. Then he figured out what it was because of this and SUDDENLY, HE WAS CHANGED!!!!!

I think you see why this might bother some people. IT's that smarmy, holier-than-thou, "IF YOU DON'T CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS LIKE THIS THEN YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!!!!" thing that is tossed around every year because ~lol War on Christmas~.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-20 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
You're being very cynical.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-20 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Or you're to optimistic.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
no, it's an accurate reading of the moral of the story

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
And the accurate reading of Scrooge is "this rich man who worked hard should have to give up his wealth for the moral good of others or he's EVIL and DOOMED TO HELL."

Doesn't make it a good story or a good reading.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
On the other hand, I guess you could just be someone who really likes things and money and is upset about it.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
I am thinking that is it. Or they are being deliberately obtuse, in order to better be the Grinch of these threads?

Uh. That wasn't really the point of the story. It wasn't that he should give up what he worked hard for, it was that he cared about acquiring and keeping wealth so much that he become a miser who thought nothing of the feelings or lives of other people.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
fingalsanteater, stop telling ayrt that they're doing it wrong. You're so smarmy and holier-than-thou.

It's not a stupid reading at all. You're just looking really hard for a reason to be upset about a movie that dares to say "people are more important than things."

And if you really want to keep ranting pointlessly, you'd be better off calling it pinko Commie propaganda than likening it to the War on Christmas BS.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh boo hoo, did someone insult your favorite childhood movie? Get over it, it wasn't even "people are more important than things."

The Grinch is the protag, and it's all about him learning ~the real meaning of Christmas~ because obviously there's only allowed to be ONE MEANING. So some people are materialistic about it. So what? Isn't that their choice??? The Grinch hated it because it was noisy and he didn't understand it.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, it's you. Hi, there. I guess your anger makes sense now, since it's all manufactured.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
yawn @ your trolling

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
My mother read this to me every Christmas when I was a child, and we watched the animated film together. Even as a six year old, I understood that the point of this story is anti-materialism. In fact, I loved toys so much that the idea of a whole town having a wonderful Christmas without gifts really stayed with me, as I'm sure it did with a lot of normal Christmas-obsessed children. That's what I took away from it, that's what stuck. Anyone disputing that is trying waaaaay too hard to be a contrary shit. Is it ALSO a story where a bad guy does bad things because he doesn't know any better until he is taught how to be good by good people doing good things? Sure. But that sure as hell ain't the moral.

Let's not forget that this is a relatively short book and film, so unless you're getting it legit confused with the Jim Carrey version, you're really reading too far into nothing in order to misinterpret it. The Grinch's only motivation is that he hates Christmas, and he wants Christmas to stop. That he himself is not materialistic doesn't matter, even if he is the protagonist. He assumes the Whos are, and tries to hurt them through this misinformation. Nearly the entire thing is the Grinch meticulously stealing presents and imagining what a terrible Christmas the Whos will have when they realize all of their gifts and decorations are gone. And then- the Whos are not upset in the slightest, and he realizes he had misinterpreted the meaning of Christmas. And he stops hating Christmas. That's the entire story.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
So you obviously missed this line in the movie: "He [The Grinch] puzzled and puzzed till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. Maybe Christmas, he thought... doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas, perhaps... means a little bit more!"

Sounds pretty anti-materialistic to me.
