There are actually people who think this about mainstream authors.
But they are wrong and annoying.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL

I'm still waiting for the day Star Wars fans wake up and realize that just because they spend an obscene amount of money on Star Wars merchandise, it doesn't give them the right to dictate the direction of the franchise or try to tell George Lucas what to do.

Obviously they aren't going to bother Lucas anymore, but I doubt the lesson has sunk in regardless.

I'm waiting for this to hit the Dr Who people about he who shall not be named.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-23 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
That won't happen until He Who Shall Not Be Named is gone. And maybe not even then.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You'd think people would realise that spending a few bucks or worse pirating a copy isn't a ticket to sit at a creator's desk and dictate content.

But you'd be overly optimistic.

How did we go from general respect and courtesy to "being your bitch"?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Twitter, probably.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno. Does "general respect and courtesy" mean that every author I tweet has to reply no matter what? I expect authors to be polite. I don't expect them to answer every single question lobbed their way because that just doesn't seem reasonable. Pointing people to an FAQ is fine, that's why FAQs exist.

So that's how OP got to "If famous people owed you the time of day then every author I've bought from would be my bitch"?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
And musical artists (or actors).

Just because they're public figures/celebs and the fans buy their music (and movies or whatever else) doesn't mean we have a right to know their private lives and harass them and their SOs (or rumoured SOs) if we don't like what we're seeing or if they aren't dating someone we approve of.

Some Writers Are Just Rude Though...

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Like Bob Orci who told fans to fuck off for criticizing Star Trek Into Darkness and unfavorably comparing it to the Indiana Jones films.

I do expect that writers show me respect as a person. And if they tell me to fuck off for sharing my opinion of their work in a thread, I absolutely will refer to them as a bitch.

Ordinarily I'd agree, but if I was on the receiving end of an international Trekkie dogpile, I might actually loose my cool a bit. Snapping at one fan who says one negative thing is not excusable. Snapping at fan #7,895 who says the exact same negative thing that fans #1-7894 said is, if not excusable, at least understandable.

Re: Some Writers Are Just Rude Though...

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I'm sorry, but it's really not. The thread was for an article that criticized the film and people were weighing in on it. And a lot of people agreed with the original author. And then Bob Orci comes in and patronizingly says "this is why I write movies for a living and you don't" and then a fan (politely) says that he had issues with the new films and Orci tells them to fuck off.

That is COMPLETELY unprofessional.

A critic also complained about Orci and the whitewashing of Khan (though he did call Orci an idiot) and Orci responded by saying that they should fuck that critic's mother.

I have had people say HORRIBLE things to me over my opinions on Star Wars and never once have I told someone to **** off.

And Orci hasn't faced 1/1,000,000th of the criticism that George Lucas faced. And Lucas never told the fans to fuck off either (although I think he had a hell of a lot more reason).

So I will maintain that Orci is a bitch. He showed no respect to people just because they politely stated why they didn't like his movie.

Okey dokey then. (Because I'm also understanding about why you'd go off on a fellow anon on a topic that's emotionally weighty for you.)

I'm not gonna tell you to fuck off for disagreeing with me.

Just that I refuse to respect someone who shows me (and other fans who simply have issues with the book/TV show/movie) complete disrespect.

All I'm saying is that respect is a two-way street and while fans have no right to demand anything from writers, the fact that someone is a writer doesn't give them license to treat other people like crap either.

btw, why people criticize Lucas? Any SW movie in particular?

It's mostly the prequels and changes to the original trilogy (special editions). Which people have a right to air their grievances, but I've seen people say some really, really awful things about Lucas -- saying that he's a pervert (preying on an underage Natalie Portman), making fun of the fact that he had no biological children, etc.

They attacked him so badly that his daughter Katie had to shut down her twitter because people wouldn't stop saying awful things about her father.

And Steven Spielberg even said that he was the one who came up with the "nuking the fridge" scene in Indiana Jones 4. But when Lucas talked to a New York Times reporter and was informed of this, he said that it was him -- that Spielberg was just trying to take the blame and protect him.

Through all of this, I think the worst thing that Lucas has said to the fan base is "These are my movies. Grow up." Which I think isn't nearly as bad as saying "Fuck off!" or "Shall we fuck your mother together?" the way Orci did.

What's funny is I have corresponded with so many authors (mostly B level but a few A) that are thrilled to hear from fans who liked their works and even asked questions about this or that. I have never once gotten a bad reply. But then again I am polite and don't refer to them as "My Bitch". But then again manners are in short supply it seems.

now that social media has made it so that we can follow our favourite writers/actors/whatever and see their random musings, it makes them feel more approachable; and so we approach them, and if we are rebuffed or ignored it hurts just like if you had walked up to a person in the same room as you and given them compliments and they had totally ignored you.

It takes a lot of maturity to deal with that. That's why I can't really feel angry at the teenagers who beg for their favourite musician to just even say hello. But still, it's a lesson they have to learn: just because they can talk to someone doesn't mean that person wants to talk back.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-22 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with this secret. I really really try to remember this when I think about George RR Martin, though. I know he's not "our bitch" and I truly think going "But what if you die before you finish!" is really insulting, but it seems to be really hard to "reign him in" in the sense that he must have ignored 59395020 deadlines by now and the publisher can't do anything because he's really famous (and his editors aren't fearing any better from what I've heard).
I'd never tell him that to the face though and I'll try to be patient.

So, while the tv show has its problems, I'm still glad for it cause I just want to know how it ends. Afterwards I can lean back an wait for GRRM to write the more detailed version. (I know not everyone thinks that way and I would ofc prefer to read the books first but what can you do...)

(Anonymous) 2014-12-22 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"rein him in".

Horses have reins. They do not have reigns.

English is not my first language, so typos like that happen... Thanks for the correction!?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-22 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
People like this should not make public appearances. Why meet people of a certain amount of notoriety if you cannot talk to them? At least in an open forum setting. You don't have to answer every single question asked of you.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-22 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Expecting someone who's making their money off their work and their brand to behave in a professional and respectful way towards their fans =/= expecting them to be your bitch, though.

I feel as though this relates to Secret #8 -- when you're making the work your business then, while you're still wholly entitled to act any way you choose, your actions now reflect on your professional brand as a whole. If you come across as a rude, patronizing and condescending asshole towards your fans, then they're not gonna be your fans for much longer.
