(NERVOUS BLEATING INTENSIFIES)

Nemesis has the evil-Batman impregnate a woman with her brother's sperm and surgically booby trap her womb such that an abortion would leave her barren.

Basically yeah Nemesis is horrible. Probably the worst of the four there.

Sometimes, Creator-Owned works can be better than stuff from the Big Two (and IDW, which is 95% licensed works).

"Nemesis has the evil-Batman impregnate a woman with her brother's sperm and surgically booby trap her womb such that an abortion would leave her barren."

... And then there's shit like this (and John Byrne's Next Men from the early 90's) that turns me off from creator-owned, because some of the shit they come up with, man... *shudders*

It's supposed to be over-the-top horrific. Yes, he's gonna go there. A lot of writers would. Gail Simone, the most genuinely socially just and woman friendly writer of comics, the woman who started her career by tackling sexist violence in comics head on, goes to horrific places all the time and I LOVE IT.

Mark himself said that he was going to make Batman into the Joker. You knew what you were getting into when you read that. If not, then consider yourself lucky. You're not gonna die just because you read something nasty.

Did I make this secret in my sleep?? I feel 10000% the same way. I'll NEVER forgive him for The Ultimates and ruining Tony, Steve, and Bruce's characters and running every female character though the garbage disposal and portraying them as some evil she-demon gold digging sluts. The only good thing about The Ultimates imo was the art and Nick Fury.
Everything else was pure ass.
I've read some of his other works too, and ugh everything is just so awful and un-fun. I wouldn't be surprised if he secretly hated superheros/comics.

Preeeeeetty much how I feel about it, too. I mean, it started all right and had some promise at the beginning, with only a few "why the fuck did they do that"s thrown in, but then it slid right down hill and never stopped. It's like Millar hated every character.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-26 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I consider Millar responsible for my having to explain to people that no, Captain America is not a right-wing asshole. And I am really, really tired of doing that.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-06 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean the premise of The Ultimates wasn't "what if all your favorite characters were actually assholes?" My world view = shattered.

But don't you know the crow was sucking cock for a reason?

In all honesty, I feel like you're compromising your case somewhat by arguing that Millar's sick and twisted shit is worse than Ellis's sick and twisted shit.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-12-24 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
The difference is that Ellis is a good writer and Millar is not.

How the fuck are those two things even related? Millar isn't a bad writer because his shit is sick and twisted. His shit is sick and twisted and also, separately, he's a shitty writer.

Seriously did I miss something OP said?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-25 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
ITT: people who misread "this guy's writing sucks" as "this is too sick and twisted for me."

(Anonymous) 2014-12-26 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Mark Millar actually writes the comics that people who hate Warren Ellis accuse Warren Ellis of writing.

Mark Millar is one of those writers whose work and personality are equal parts shitty.

At most, I have to give him a little credit for telling people to back off from accusing James Gunn of copying 'Kick-Ass' when 'Super' came out, as while the two have vaguely similar premises, they're still significantly different in execution.

But only a little. That doesn't make up for how vile and mean-spirited the majority of Millar's works (be they creator owned or for-hire with DC or Marvel) are, imo.

One good thing about Millar is that lots of fanboys like him, so now that I'm not subscribing to comics anymore and have sold off lots of my old issues - the Millar ones get high prices. Seriously, over $100 for some Civil War issues. I get cash AND no Millar in my house!

(Anonymous) 2014-12-25 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so glad that comics are becoming more main stream so the vile and disgusting underbelly can be exposed and ridiculed.

Pretty sure the only thing I've ever read that Millar worked on is Authority, and of course Ellis created that, so I don't have much of an opinion on him. (Though Mark Millar is making me think of Frank Miller, and I can't put into words how much I hate The Dark Knight Returns.)

As someone who recently fell in love with Warren Ellis' The Authority, then watched it turn into the rape joke power hour when Mark Millar took over, I'm feeling this secret really really hard.

You can also tell that he thinks his mean-spirited and ham-fisted social commentary is really smart, and it's very irritating.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-25 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
Is this truly an unpopular opinion? I guess it depends on what corner of the net you're looking at?

But anyone, OP, I share your distaste.

If I see one more neck ears praise Mark Millar, I don't even know... I'll never get over Old Man Logan and Ultimates and his incest fetish. Ugh. Not even going to get into the Madonna-Whore complex... He's just AWFUL.
