The covers are pretty nice.

They would make nice movie posters.

They're well designed, yeah. Didn't they release a bunch of Bronte novels or Austen novels or something with covers based off of those as well?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I remember seeing some in Barnes and Nobles. I think it was Pride and Prejudice, but also Wuthering Heights... basically the books SMeyers cited as being influences on Twilight. Publishers were trying to capture a younger audience, but I have no idea if that worked or not.

They are rather pretty.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
They were pretty the first time they came around, yeah, but they've been imitated so much since I'm sick with this design.

They are really pretty. When the series was at the height of its popularity my eyes were always drawn to the books every time I was in a book shop.

Kinda OT but for the longest time I didn't know that the book with the pretty apple cover that was prominently displaced everywhere and that awful Twilight book everyone on the internet was ranting about were one and the same.

I thought the covers were nice as well, OP. They're right up there with the covers for the adult edition novels of the Harry Potter series.

Am I the only one who thinks they look cheap and cliche? They're clean and neat, and the colours are pleasant to look at, but that's about it. It doesn't even have anything to do with my attitude towards the series (I don't really hate it - in fact, I'm glad it exists because it's so hilarious) - this design is just... meh.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Now they look cheap and cliche, but didn't they start the trend of simple covers like that? Maybe I spend too much in the fantasy section but I thought they stood out a bit for not having any photos/paintings of people with windswept hair, shiny armor and swords and fainting women.

Before they became popular or I'd ever heard of them I was also lured in by the pretty covers. I also really liked the title "Twilight" has always been a word I just really liked. Then I read the first few pages and thought it was mediocre edging on awful and put it back. I was very surprised and confused when those books got so popular. Not that people liked them, every book has an audience, just that they became such a phenomenon.

I have no comment on the books or movies (and I've still yet to read or watch them), but I've always found the covers to be eye-catching. Simple but pretty.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the exact same way. Hate Twilight and it's racism and misogyny, yet always drawn to Twilight merch. I remember awhile back Sephora sold a Twilight-themed Lip Venom that had glitter in it. The item description was some cheesy spiel about how the product represented the mingling of the vampire and human worlds and I actually laughed when I read it... but I still wanted to buy it.

More recently, I was tempted by all the special edition Breaking Dawn boxsets. So much pretty.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-28 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god yes. I'm no Twilight fan (only watched the movies to laugh at them), but boy can they hook me with the classy-looking merch. I still own a Twilight hairbrush, which is a very good-quality brush in a lovely violet color. In fact, they have a whole line of hair products in that same beautiful color -- I'm tempted to seek them out.

Also, that woodsy Pacific Northwest aesthetic? Love it. I may have a problem with those movies, but my eyes sure don't.

I do find the covers pretty even if I don't like the content.

[identity profile] brandiweed.livejournal.com 2014-12-28 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, those covers were great eyecatches. Of course, what's happened is that in a bad case of follow-the-leader, EVERYONE'S trying to do something like that now and their eyecatch potential has bottomed out.

Yeah, the covers are pretty much the only well-thought-out part of the whole series. They're nice.

I agree, the covers are cool. I wouldn't go out of my way to buy these books, but if someone gave me a hardcover set I'd put them up on the bookshelf just because the covers look nice.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-28 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
It amazes me that it took that long for romance novelists to figure out that a classy, minimalist cover sells more books.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-28 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
Those covers are probably what made the books so popular. Never underestimate the importance of a graphic designer.

They are nice, but now I have this curious (but unfair, I'll admit) reaction in which whenever I see a minimalistic cover with an object on it, my mind associates it to Twilight or Fifty Shades and assumes it's going to be a crappy book or with the same themes, too. It doesn't help that fantasy/romance and LOL-totally-so-edgy porn are the most common genres to imitate them, for obvious reasons.

I love the hell out of those covers. And I have an appreciation for the books too, though they are definitely the book equivalent of a bag of chips.

I also like the titles and how they sort of goes through a logical lunar cycle. This was particularly useful when I worked in a bookstore and had to memorize the order they go in, since the books don't actually have numbers on them anywhere.
