Re: Dark fic

Depends on the type of darkness. I like fics where really dark events happen and/or have a dark atmosphere. I like fics that are psychologically dark, but only for some characters/circumstances. I love dark character death if it happens in the climax or if the character death is built into the premise, but not when it just sort of happens along the way.

So rapefic, dark casefic, fics with incredibly harsh and serious events or tragic events, nasty seedy environments like war or oppressive regimes or criminal sex or drug trades, or violence/torture, attempted suicide, alcoholism/addiction, or really horrific villains = all good. Fics that explore a character being really messed up depends on the character and type of messed-up-ness.

I'm not a huge fan of dark AUs (like dystopias), and not a fan of "trash the set" type of fics where everything is destroyed and miserable. I also prefer dark fics to be short if they have an unhappy ending. If a darkfic is longer than about 5K words, I expect it to have an at least partly-happy ending.

And I prefer "dark" in the sense of harsh, violent, tragic, or traumatic. I don't like "dark" in the sense of "bleak and ugly and hopeless."
