Dark fic

(Anonymous) 2014-12-28 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you love it? Hate it?

Re: Dark fic

Depends on the fic. If it's well written I will read a lot. But if it's just unrelenting misery that never lets up does wear on me.

I don't like it. Not my thing at all. I want happiness in my fic.

I enjoy it as long as their is no character death of the character I am reading it for.

Only as a prelude to really fluffy comfort

Depends on the fandom and on the fic. Because I would read dark Carnivàle fic long before I ever showed any interest in any sort of dark MCU fic.

Depends on the fic. Some of it has been totally amazing, by writers I trust, and evokes feelings that stay with me for years. But a lot of it has been unreadable after a few pages. Dark fic for the sake of being "edgy", for the sake of punishing a character the writer obviously doesn't like, I skip those completely. Luckily, in my fandom, writers of those types are pretty well known and easily avoidable.

Depends on the subject matter. I'm not usually a fan of slave, prostitute or rape fic. Torture fic can be iffy. If the writer is good, then I might enjoy those subjects. I do like sci-fi horror type fic though.

I can enjoy fic with some darkness, but I don't like fic where it just goes on and on. I tend to avoid fic with things like rape, torture and lots and lots of character angst. In general it doesn't do anything for me except to make me depressed. (I often find them to be a bit ooc too.)

I like it, depending in the fandom, the characters, the length, my mood etc

Depends on the type of darkness. I like fics where really dark events happen and/or have a dark atmosphere. I like fics that are psychologically dark, but only for some characters/circumstances. I love dark character death if it happens in the climax or if the character death is built into the premise, but not when it just sort of happens along the way.

So rapefic, dark casefic, fics with incredibly harsh and serious events or tragic events, nasty seedy environments like war or oppressive regimes or criminal sex or drug trades, or violence/torture, attempted suicide, alcoholism/addiction, or really horrific villains = all good. Fics that explore a character being really messed up depends on the character and type of messed-up-ness.

I'm not a huge fan of dark AUs (like dystopias), and not a fan of "trash the set" type of fics where everything is destroyed and miserable. I also prefer dark fics to be short if they have an unhappy ending. If a darkfic is longer than about 5K words, I expect it to have an at least partly-happy ending.

And I prefer "dark" in the sense of harsh, violent, tragic, or traumatic. I don't like "dark" in the sense of "bleak and ugly and hopeless."

The angsty friendshippy variety. I can eat that with a spoon. Sometimes it's almost as good as h/c with a happy ending.

I think it helps me to work through my own issues. But also it allows for the exploration of some of the darker ideas without the pressure to have a happy ending, so in some cases it may be more integral and complete, concept-wise, than a lighter analogue (depending, of course, on the concept).

I don't exactly see the point of it. Usually a good story strives for a balance between emotional aspects, since too much of one without the other often lessens the impact. Unrelenting tragedy or constant fluff just desensitizes audiences.

Love it.

The more innocent and light-hearted the source material, the better.

Re: Dark fic

nah

i'm into light fluffy things mostly, so dark reimaginings are the last thing i'm looking for.

Re: Dark fic

(Anonymous) 2014-12-28 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Hate it. I like angst, but there's a limit to what I find believable/enjoyable, and all fics must have happy endings or at least hopeful endings for me to fully enjoy them. I also don't like fluff, but that's because I find it boring.

Depends on why it's considered dark fic. I love suspenseful angst/horror that keeps the rest of the plot going, but if it's just an excuse to pile tons and tons of angst or torture onto a character without any real plot to it, I'm not gonna read it.

I write a lot of darker fic though, I just hardly ever post it since most fandoms I follow are all about the fluffy stuff (which I'm not personally fond of but will read on rare occasions).

It's a pretty big category that includes a lot of things.

Most of the things I like have darker themes, but a lot of dark fic cross the line between dark and pain porn, where it's just tragedy for the sake of tragedy. H/C and whump suffer from this the most, hence why I only like that sort of theme as an element in a larger story.

Having said that, there is a time and place for that sort of thing, but in general it's not in a long fic, or a story that's meant to have a different plot.

Love it. I want dark bloody cynicism and misery everywhere. Kill my darlings, kill the darlings of my darlings, kill everyone. But only when it's well-written, and not indulgent whump or H/C. Also not some bullshit "slit wrists in the bathtub to Evanescence lyrics" misconception of darkfic. I mean, darkfic that either extrapolates on the worst implications of canon, or luxuriates in what canon already explicitly provides.

But it seems like most of fandom wants fluff and uncomplicated HEA. Nothing against that stuff, it just never tickles my personal fancy the way good meaty darkfic does.

Depends on what you mean by 'dark'. If by dark you mean, throwing every nasty thing you can think of at the main character, hauling out all the angst-in-a-can tropes (rape, child abuse, torture, whatever), and basically kicking the shite out of, and making into a huge, pathetic woobie, the 'hero' of the story.....

Then no. I hate it.

Something that genuinely explores the darker side of a character, like taking them to an extreme and seeing how/if they bend or break (like Sam deciding killing possessed people for their blood was okay because it would save the world) - that's interesting, if done well, and i don't mind that.

Or a well done creepy/horror thing. But just - torture/rape/abuse porn dressed up as 'dark'? No.

In general I'd rather have a dark canon than a dark fic, but I guess it depends on my mood, too.
