I don't exactly see the point of it. Usually a good story strives for a balance between emotional aspects, since too much of one without the other often lessens the impact. Unrelenting tragedy or constant fluff just desensitizes audiences.

That only applies to long stories with long detailed plots, though.

Not strictly speaking. You can still throw a moment of remembered happiness or tell a joke even in a short story.

Unless you're writing something that's only a few paragraphs long, I guess.

Oh yeah, but I really, really would never say that "darkfic" = NOT A SINGLE MOMENT OF HAPPINESS OR HUMOR EVERRRRRR.

For me, "darkfic" = "fic where a lot of dark stuff happens"/"darkness is the prevailing tone."

I might have just been unfortunate enough to come across examples written by angsty teenagers or something, but in my experience something labelled "dark fic" usually indicates that the author just tried to pack as much tragedy into it as possible.

Maybe I'm just not reading the right stuff.

Hmmmm....now that I think of it, I don't remember really reading a lot of darkfic that was actually labeled "darkfic," come to think of it, I mostly label things as "darkfic" in my head, or bookmarks or recs.

I would say that it doesn't even apply to long stories. IDK what herpy's getting at, I find that a lot of stories that are too carefully balanced are toothless and fail to get any point across at all (some do, but plenty don't). And plenty of long stories that are mostly dark and depressing are amazing as long as there's variety within the darkness.

I mean, I definitely like there to be a glimmer of hope or humor or happines among the darkness, but balance among all the different emotional aspects? No way is that necessary.

IA, I mostly meant that even when this is the case, balance usually works that way in long stories, not short ones.

But herpy's reply above clarified things a lot. I don't think they were saying what you thought they were saying!

Variety was exactly what I was getting at, actually.

That's literally the concept of narrative balance: the art of not making a story maintain a constant one-note emotional spectrum. The most used techniques tend to be having characters joke about something during or after an especially horrific scene in order to have the next horrific scene still be impactful.

I don't think dark fic has to only have darkness in it. Some classic Gothic narratives come pretty close to what would be considered dark fic in fandom.

I might just have come across bad examples, to be fair to it. Sturgeon's Law, and all.

"Unrelenting tragedy"

Don't be an emo kid when you watch the road. Don't be James. I can't hold you all the way back from the theatre.

lol but you have to since the theatre is the living room.

Also I couldn't be James since I don't like MLP.
