I think they're both overrated. Riza's boring, and Winry's abusive and a hypocrite.

I don't really think we should take typical anime slapstick as evidence that she's abusive

It's not typical anime slapstick. I've seen my share of that and it doesn't faze me... this was different. She doesn't just beat Ed up in one frame and nobody ever mentions it again. Ed and Al act scared of her and how she's going to react to them damaging her automail just at the thought of her when they're not even around her. It makes the beatings seem a little more than metaphorical.

Yeah you know what, Ed and Al react with even more over-the-top horror upon even thinking about Izumi. Her training of them, played straight, could totally be seen as child abuse.

Aaaaand yet all of it is played for laughs anyway because shonen. You can go on and on about how Winry's behavior is somehow worse than the usual anime slapstick but it won't make it true
