Winry is amazing and has remained my favorite female character (in any fandom) for eight years now. So glad you picked up FMA, anon.

I can understand being a bit cowed when it comes to Riza in canon vs fanon. Her development is more dependent on Roy. On the other hand, I don't know anyone who doesn't at least like Winry.

You must not have been around some of the really hardcore Ed/Roy shippers back in the day. Winry bashing seems to have calmed down a lot in the last couple of years (although it was never really a massive movement. Not on the scale of, say, Sakura bashing by certain Naruto/Sasuke fans) but there used to be a fair number of Ed/Roy fics that would character her as a shrill and abusive harpy. I don't miss those days

Yeah, I was gonna say, Riza is great but I've seen Winry take more undeserved flack than any other character in the canon.

This still happens. I even remember a thread a few months back with a couple people STALWARTLY defending abusive Winry and Ed leaving abusive Winry behind to run into Roy's loving arms.

I used to love Riza to bits, until the realization that everything she does, she does it for Mustang and nothing for herself and then I went just meh. I'm sorry I'm so disappointed in her.

I disagree. I don't think everything she does is for him. They just share the same goals. I think that was made obvious in the Ishval arc.

Agreed, it's kind of like how people think Castiel does everything for Dean whereas it's more like they share very important ideals and while Dean might have inspired Cas to be who he really was on the outside, he would have been the person he was with out him.

In theory i agree with this, but in practice i just love FMA for portraying her as probably the most competent soldier among Mustang's crew. There's enough anime out there where the token girl on the team is always kept away from battle or only gets to fight in some completely insignificant and instantly forgotten Very Special Episode.

Winry just straight up is better, anon. I think you would have gotten more disagreement back during the height of Royai but outside of that she's just kind of... meh?

Winry is awesome and so is Riza (even if everything she does is for Mustang, though I ship RoyAi), but the best female character right next to Winry IMO is Olivier Armstrong.

But Olivier is also great. The ladies are all great, no need to pit them against each other :).

I'm sad for everyone on this thread who is being wrong about Hawkeye ;), but really Winry and Riza are both great and there should be more fic about the two of them hanging out and just *getting* each other in a way nobody else does because that is just canon.

ITA. I hate it when people reduce Riza's motivation to "she's doing it for Roy." It was shown quite clearly in canon that she is haunted by what she did in the war and she is trying to atone and make sure that atrocities like that won't happen again.

The great thing about FMA is that there are multiple characters who, if in any other show, would be automatically my favourite character. I think ultimately Winry was my favourite but that's out of a number of characters who are also completely amazing.

I found the both of them very meh in the manga and brotherhood. I liked the both of them in the original anime though.

I like both of them, but the Riza fans and Royai fans can be a bit... zealous. There's a not very uncommon mindset that the pairing is for more 'mature' fans, and that is really quite untrue.

I also think Winry is a more layered character though.

Heh heh, I mean -- the war storylines may be more 'adult' but Winry is part of that too. Whereas a lot of Royai tends to be written from a very juvenile, didactic POV where nobody matters to them but each other and no one my criticize the OTP. So...yeah.
