I used to love Riza to bits, until the realization that everything she does, she does it for Mustang and nothing for herself and then I went just meh. I'm sorry I'm so disappointed in her.

I disagree. I don't think everything she does is for him. They just share the same goals. I think that was made obvious in the Ishval arc.

Agreed, it's kind of like how people think Castiel does everything for Dean whereas it's more like they share very important ideals and while Dean might have inspired Cas to be who he really was on the outside, he would have been the person he was with out him.

That's a good example. It's the reason I can't stand D/C fic or meta. Every time someone says "Castiel rebelled for Dean", I want to ask them if they watched the show.

In their defense, he did say to Dean, and I quote, "I killed two angels this week. My brothers. I'm hunted. I rebelled and I did it all - all of it - for you. And you failed. You and your brother destroyed the world. And I lost everything for nothing. So keep your opinions to yourself.".

So, to be fair, somebody could ask you the same thing.

That's what I got out of it. That they're both burdened by their wrong doings and the only path they can see is to make sure the future doesn't repeat the past. Riza thinks Roy's the one capable of that job.

As well as the fact that they both care deeply for each other.

I think it's writing a lot off to say Riza just serves Roy.

In theory i agree with this, but in practice i just love FMA for portraying her as probably the most competent soldier among Mustang's crew. There's enough anime out there where the token girl on the team is always kept away from battle or only gets to fight in some completely insignificant and instantly forgotten Very Special Episode.
likeadeuce: i would like to say i'm riza at work, but I'm more like Roy. 'plotting extracurriculars! cookies for breakfast!' (mustang work day)

Everything she does she does for him, like carry around a gun that she is empowered to point at him when she doesn't like the way his path is going (and then actually does so at a key point in the plot.) I think the lady's agency is just fine, frankly.

Sometimes, I wonder if the fact that people here are opposed to devotion comes from people here not having close relationships with people in real life.

Hmm, well, honestly, I love Roy and Riza's devotion IN FICTION, I think I'd be pretty worried about them on many levels if they were my friends.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-29 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Are you okay with saying why?

[personal profile] likeadeuce 2014-12-29 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I mean...they're war criminals dealing with PTSD? I'm not saying they couldn't have ended up with a devoted relationship outside of that context, but I don't look at them as having one to emulate considering the circumstances.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-29 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
For me it's not about emulation, just understanding, and not casting something off just because it's not something you* feel or think you would feel.

Sure, but the person I responded to said ppl who don't like the relationship must not have close friends??

(Anonymous) 2014-12-29 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah but they're soldiers who are working towards something and are constantly thrust in high-stress situations. Of course that if they were friends just hanging out it'd be weird, but I don't see why comparing those two situations should even come into play since they're so different.

Right, but by the same token it doesn't seem to me to be relevant how I feel about 'devotion' in real life, because their circumstances are so specific.
