I think because of how much of a focus Japan puts on having anime+manga characters look 'perfect' and 'cute', seeing Western-styled fanart of them - when you're so used to the alternative - tends to be a /CLAWS OUT OWN EYES HOLY SHIT experience.

Eg. when you're browsing a tag on Pixiv, it's no problem sifting through all the inevitable shit fanart, but suddenly you glimpse a thumbnail of something that's blatantly from Tumblr and it's like NO. NO.

Or is that just me lol

I know exactly what you mean (it's always funny to see the same pieces of fanart get 10k notes on tumblr and 5 favs on pixiv..)
