Well most anime is generic to be fair. Pixar character designs vary way more.

Except when it comes to women. Sigh.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-28 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
can I just say I'm really in love with you specifically calling out calarts here

I dont have anything against the place but it definitely made me laugh

(Anonymous) 2014-12-28 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, how is it calling out calarts?

seriously calarts is pushing out CLONES! sure it all looks nice but they beat you into drawing just one single way as the "right" way and everything is getting DULL looking

I think both are good styles that are too often turned into generic nonsense

I guess the truth... is somewhere in the middle

(Anonymous) 2014-12-28 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I see more of the opposite: people bitching on and on about Disney/Dreamworks' sameface and sharing every new "Honey Lemon = Anna = Rapunzel lmao lmao lmao!!!" joke while not caring that the anime they love has the same problem.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2014-12-29 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Which strikes me as weird, because Big Hero 6 did a really good job of giving each character a distinctive silhouette design.

I've come across so many people who dismiss those characters due to sameface and consider it sexism, but then go on and on about how Sailor Moon, with its every single girl looking identical outside of hair and height, is a paragon of feminism.

So yeah same.

yeah definitely agreed

it also feels like cartoons are in a constant 3/4ths view, like anime might be limitedly animated but at least it'll have an overhead camera shot once in a while

(Anonymous) 2014-12-28 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
This secret confuses me because those two drawings look totally different to me.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-28 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I think OP means that these are the standard male and female face in disney/dreamorks movies.

Even if lifeless generiblob anime designs rankle me more, agreed. Also, seconding the dig on calarts (every time someone does it, I can't not laugh).

I think because of how much of a focus Japan puts on having anime+manga characters look 'perfect' and 'cute', seeing Western-styled fanart of them - when you're so used to the alternative - tends to be a /CLAWS OUT OWN EYES HOLY SHIT experience.

Eg. when you're browsing a tag on Pixiv, it's no problem sifting through all the inevitable shit fanart, but suddenly you glimpse a thumbnail of something that's blatantly from Tumblr and it's like NO. NO.

Or is that just me lol

I think it's all about what you're watching with anime, there is a definite trend of same face, but western animation priorities = / = japanese animation priorities and I get pretty sick of the attitude that just because things are done differently, it's automatically inferior (which is honestly a pretty common attitude in western art schools and some studios, anime tends to be looked down upon a lot.)

And you're right to call out places like Cal Arts, there's really a formula to the style that comes out of that school in the same way there is a formula to anime (Cal Arts likes to pretend they are more original and creative, but it's largely a lie.)

I do have to say I think a lot of Western Animation has diversity in their character design but they really.. REALLY need to be called out on how women always look the same. And Disney specifically needs to go back to what they did in the 90s and at least *attempt* different styles in each movie. They've gotten too addicted to their really generic style.

Disney/Dreamworks provides mass market entertainment. Of course they're going to prefer a standardised product, with slight tweaks year on year to keep it fresh.

I think this secret is a more a reaction to Disney/Dreamworks marketing than anything else. When you're told incessantly that these movies are "magical" and "unique" and then the actual results are highly standardised, eventually some people (not many apparently) are going to start noticing the contrast.

If their advertising instead said "pretty much more of the same" no matter how true it was, and what people really wanted, it would still be a terrible marketing plan, and generate zero consumer excitement.

All marketing works like this. Bounty bars aren't made on tropical islands by beautiful people. They're made in factories on conveyor belts overseen by tired workers in hygiene hats. Disney films aren't "unique" and "magical". They use sameface, because that's what customers want and expect.

If I have to see one more dreamworks face Free! (and whatever anime is popular now) fanart...

(Anonymous) 2014-12-29 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I tend to agree, but I've come to slightly prefer the western style because it has more potential to be more expressive, if only because it actually uses face structure. That's what I like to see the most when people draw anime characters in other styles.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-29 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Those are Jin Kim's drawings, right? I always thought his stuff looked a lot like Glen Keane's so I assume he also went to CalArts. Disney's visual style has been stagnating in the past few years too. I always thought Dreamworks' character design had a bit more variety to it.

Anime styles are so varied, so obviously there will be good ones and also really shitty ones. I think a lot of the backlash against anime might stem from the Western anime craze from the early/mid-2000s when a lot of people were toting anime styles as the greatest and that Western animation was inferior. Really, the whole thing is subjective.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-12-29 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm inclined to agree with you. It's a whole 'stones and glass houses' scenario, tbh. Western art -more specifically, American animation- can be just as "samefaced" as anime can be. And I do think CalArts and their 'house style' have a lot to do with it. But I can't say much about what goes on inside CalArts, because I've never been there. So yeah.

Regarding your last point, I... kind of have to disagree. I like seeing anime characters done up in Western-based styles, because I find it neat to see different interpretations every once in a while. Same thing with seeing Western-based properties done up in anime/manga-esque styles. (example: I saw some very awesome drawings of Yondu on Pixiv that, strictly imo, captured the spirit of his character far better than most Western artists have. Also, I used to check the TMNT tag frequently and saw some really lovely stuff that blew pretty much all the English-speaking artists out of the water imo)

But, I totally get where it isn't everyone's cuppa, and that's okay.

I really dislike this style (shown in the secret). Especially in 3d animation, I find the movements of the mouths gross and annoying.

I like substance more than artstyle, and most anime now are just sexualized moe blobs, stuff boarding on pedophilia/Incest, or the same re-heated shit over and over again. The only two things I can think of that have been at least original/fun are AOT and Free.

you've saved me the trouble of making a similar secret, anon. i just hate when animanga styles get treated as inferior, full stop.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-29 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
OMG I agree with this so much. I enjoy pixiv, but I'm still sort of baffled by how much people love the western cartoon same-face. They all have the exact same noses and the same obnoxious expressions on their faces. I recognize and respect people who are good at drawing overall, there is no questioning someone's skill at drawing the human form. However when it comes down to aesthetics, I much prefer the japanese anime look.
