Regarding your last point, I... kind of have to disagree. I like seeing anime characters done up in Western-based styles, because I find it neat to see different interpretations every once in a while. Same thing with seeing Western-based properties done up in anime/manga-esque styles. (example: I saw some very awesome drawings of Yondu on Pixiv that, strictly imo, captured the spirit of his character far better than most Western artists have. Also, I used to check the TMNT tag frequently and saw some really lovely stuff that blew pretty much all the English-speaking artists out of the water imo)
But, I totally get where it isn't everyone's cuppa, and that's okay.
