As part of the fandom but not caught up in the general hysteria, I wouldn't be too surprised if at least some of the anon hate is real, or if a few people have been/will be driven to actual self-harm by the frenzy (not the high-profile, obviously fake cases. I'm cpncerned that we may not even hear of any real incidents until well after the dust settles.) All it takes to set off a contagious panic is one person faking it convincingly enough to fool a handful of others, and a lot of these kids are unfortunately very susceptible to that sort of thing.

Having said that, a lot of them must also be either dumb as a box of rocks or just plain lying if they haven't disabled the goddamn anonymous ask feature by now. That was the FIRST thing everyone should have done when the whole thing got started.

OTOH, I will say, gullible or not, a very large number of people across various fandoms are trying hard to be helpful and kind, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.
