I wear holey socks just because I can't be bothered to throw them out until they get really bad.

Why do you judge for that? How do you know the person wearing them just can't afford better socks?

I don't 'judge' judge it.) But, but it's so easy to throw it away and get another pair!
My sis subjects herself to holey socks though because she has favorite pairs.

I know you're not actually talking about folk who are frugal out of necessity, but I gotta agree with diet there (and it gives me the willies!).

I still have trouble throwing things out even though I now have the means to replace them. I'm getting better about it, but it's still very much ingrained from being at points in life where no, it's not so easy to throw things away.

Bah, not really meaning this at you either. This thread just reminded me how rankled I felt as a kid when people told me this without understanding we were absolutely not on the same level.

And throwing out the food too, you don't like it?

Hm, but you can mend socks? Holey socks just don't work well. =/

Unless it's old, I still can't orz
It took way too long imo to relax about not being able to finish a plate at a restaurant, and not asking for a doggy bag. Eurgh these habits D:

We totally mended socks when there was time, and it's not a bad skill to have when zombie apocalypse time never happens I guess.

Is it a thing, should I make preparations for a zombie invasion?
=D

It sounds wasteful but I throw away chipped tableware. Because antisanitary and germs.

Feeling compelled to finish your plate is the worst! I feel like that when someone has cooked for me.

Same. A sock that has one hole in it but is otherwise fine is still a perfectly good sock! To me it's a huge waste of money to throw it away. It's like throwing away a plate that has a tiny chip on the edge. It's still functional, the only thing that's affected is the aesthetics.

DA

Depends where the hole is though. Sometimes holes can rub and cause blisters, which is usually about the time I realize the sock needs throwing away. Less aesthetics and more 'this thing is no longer functional'.

Yeah, if a sock wears out on the heel and no longer protects me from a blister, out it goes.

If you can't afford better socks, then you should learn to darn holey socks. It's not hard.

lol ok, I will immediately change all my habits regarding my socks because an anon on the internet told me to.

For the record, I can afford better socks, I just have a lower threshold than you for when I need to replace them. But it's lovely how judgey you sound of people who can't afford better socks and that you seem to think poor people should adopt a particular behavior because you say so.

It's lovely how quick you are to whine "HDU judge meeee!" when someone tells you that you're wasting money because you can't be assed to learn a simple skill. Do you throw out a shirt when a button comes off it, too?

I know how to sew a button. Buttons coming off are more important to me than holes in socks. If I don't CARE enough to darn a sock, why do other people care if I do it?

If you don't care enough to darn socks with holes in them, why should you care if someone points out, fairly mildly, that you're wasting money by not darning socks with holes in them?

Wasting money? What? How? o.O

And I wouldn't put a condescending "it's not hard" in the same category as "mildly" pointing something out.

If you are throwing stuff away that could be made almost as good as new with a little work and care, you are wasting money. I didn't think that needed an explanation.

But I'm not throwing them away. I keep wearing them even with the holes. Have you been reading the thread...?

ETA: reading the thread, I realized I should have said "higher threshold" rather than "lower" in that comment way up there *points*. That probably made my intents way less clear and I'm sorry for that.

To clarify a bit more, I don't throw socks out quickly. I don't call them "unusable" until they are way more holey than most people would say. I just wear them like that because meh.
