When people go shopping on Thanksgiving evening for "black Thursday".

I don't think the retail employees who have to miss dinner with their families so they can go deal with crowds of people frothing at the mouth to buy things that could have waited til later are thrilled

Nayrt but while I agree with you I am tickled by the notion of black Friday shopping as some kind of adventure sport

AYRT
I'm not the one who's forcing them to be there. You want to judge somebody, judge the people in charge who decided they have to stay open etc etc.

They wouldn't decide the store had to stay open if there weren't customers, so yeah, you kind of are.

Do you understand how economics work? They are only open because customers (like you) go in and buy stuff.

But what about people who want to work it? It's time and a half for them. Believe it or not, many stores WILL opt for volunteers and those that volunteer probably did their thing early, have no family to do anything with, or friends are out of town, or a myriad of other reasons.

Not all, I would even say most, employees are forced into that.

Not saying some stores don't have shitty managers who do force employees, though. But I doubt it's ALL of them or even most.

I shop on that night cause it;'s one of the few nights /I/ can get off work (though i can volunteer to work as well, and i have in the past), so I enjoy it with my family.

That kinda feels like Russian roulette. What if they want to work it? Great. What if they all have families who they don't get to see often and want to spend some time with them? Not so great.

This year at the restaurant I work at we had people who volunteered to work Christmas. Great! Other years? we did not have enough people and one of my managers had to miss Christmas morning with his daughters to work even though he really didn't want to (don't remember if this was last year or the year before).

Yes, but it's why I don't see stopping this is good. Cause it IS an extra, non-work day that some people wouldn't mind working, especially fort the extra pay.

Christmas is usually not worked, except for those random places that are open, in which case, those people need to close up shop on that day. Period. I'd say Christmas is that one day most people want off. Thanksgiving is more of a so-so one to me, since it's only an American Holiday.

Oh God, this. All of this. I judge so hard for this. We can't have one day out of the whole year where we appreciate what we already have? We have to make some poor soul leave their family and rush to their retail job so we can have the privilege of spending money on some piece of crap made in China?

I especially hate it when the shoppers are like "Oh, we didn't know what else to do." Read a book, watch a movie, go for a walk, play some football, call Grandma, have a conversation over tea. There's a million and one things to do that don't involve shopping.

As someone who loves shopping, fucking this.

THIS so much. I work retail, and for the past two Thanksgivings, I missed family dinner because we opened on Thursday. And it's even worse when customers go, "Oh, poor you! It must be awful working today."

Yes, it is! And I have to spend it with jerks like you! >:(

Ughh I KNOW. "Oh you poor thing, why did you have to come into work today?" Because people like you insist on coming in to shop! Dumbass.

Sorry you've had to miss Thanksgiving dinners. :(

ia. but i also judge the hell out of people who shop on black friday. it's so goddamned stupid and i can't understand why somebody would want to go out into that insanity just to save a couple bucks. fucking consumerism, jesus.

but people who shop on thansgiving's 'black thursday' deserve a special place in hell. same with people who go to starbucks or the movie theater on christmas. i worked at a movie theater when i was younger and most employees there are 16/17 year olds who are being taken away from their families so you can watch a goddamned movie on christmas.

To you, it's Christmas. To a significant percentage of the population, it's Thursday.

Re: Dumb things you're judgy about

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
oddly enough it doesn't bother me nearly as much if the person doesn't actually celebrate christmas. but i mean, 90% of the population does, so it's not a good reason for things to be open. if you don't celebrate christmas and you want to work on that day, go ahead, but NOBODY should be coerced to do so, just like nobody should be coerced to do so on thanksgiving evening, and believe me, they are, all for the sake of making money.

Re: Dumb things you're judgy about

It shouldn't bother you at all that the quarter of your country who isn't Christian might want to keep living their lives on the day of a religious festival that has fuck all to do with them. If it means so much to you, book the day off, say it's for religious observation, and stand your ground. That's what I have to do for my celebrations, and I get one whole hell of a lot less societal support for it because closed isn't and has never been the default.

Re: Dumb things you're judgy about

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Boohoo, things are closed for one whole day. I'm not Christian either but it doesn't bother me one bit that I can't go get Starbucks or go to a restaurant for a single day.

In other words, deal with it.

um, I went with my best friend to the movies on Christmas because my family was 2000 miles away. what the fuck did you decide I should be doing?

Re: Dumb things you're judgy about

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
like you couldn't just entertain yourselves at home so that people could enjoy their holiday? well, at least you got what YOU wanted.

fuck you. you're an asshole.

I thought Christmas with the Cranks was just a movie, not based on reality.

I don't think I feel that...vehement...about it, but I do also dislike it in general when people shop on Thanksgiving or Christmas (especially Thanksgiving, I mean there are people who don't celebrate Christmas but almost all of the US celebrates Thanksgiving) for non-necessities.

ETA: I don't really judge people who shop on Black Friday (maybe a little if it's really early) but I also don't really get the appeal. So not worth the trouble.
