Re: why is body shaming of some groups okay but not others

What do you mean? do you mean when Tumblr makes fun of a post about body expectations of men? because anorexia is hilarious when it affects men!

I don't really understand the post, the context provided is cut off halfway...

nayrt

It is a play on this post http://marigoldtrigger.tumblr.com/post/107353301561/squided-when-will-people-fucking-realize-that

It was originally about men also having unrealistic expectations in the media (and how it can cause anorexia). But tumblr decided to make it into a big joke. They always have bunchs of diff pics.

I read that and thought it was mocking the terrible anatomy in the art more than men. Did it mention anorexia? Or is the text an anorexia meme or something?

Re: nayrt

The original text is just about how men also have unrealistic unexpectations.

You know those posts where they talk about how so and so character gives little girls an unrealistic ideal they need to attain (which can cause low self-esteem, anorexia, etc).

Someone made a post about it with various pictures of characters/people that are unrealistic ideals for men (like Chris Evans, Thor, etc). Basically to say, "Hey, dont forget men are also affected by this." And well, you see how tumblr reacts to that.

That's a terrible post, but the original one, with all the muscle-y guys? I totally see why people are making fun of it. The difference between being a handsome, fit man and being a beautiful, fit woman is that women actually have all these negative reactions when they aren't that idealized woman. Men get a bunch of movies where non-ideal men get the idealized woman they want, and women who judge on physical appearance are called shallow. Important difference, I think.

Um. Please don't tell men what their experiences in life are. You are not a good guesser.

Not a guess.

commenting on trends in media = telling people what their experiences are, now?

But the non-ideal man is a fucking joke. Like, literally. They are always the buffoon husband who fucks everything up.

Now who are the ideal men in media? Hot, buff guys. Chris Evans, Ryan Reynolds, Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, basically everyone that shows up on google image search for "sexiest men." Oddly enough, Jack Black and Kevin James are not on that list.

and guys are the ones who own those movie companies, and guys are the ones running those studios, and guys are the producers, the directors, etc...

as a guy who grew up around those images I get how they might be harmful, but when you start your post about men's issues with defensive garbage like "WHEN WILL PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THIS HURTS MEN TOOOOO!" it becomes a joke. why not just write a post about harmful body images? why does it have to start out as a defensive attack on similar posts made by women, or with the implication that people never care about men's issues? why can't it be an informational article about male anorexia? or teens who feel like they have to body-build themselves into harm? the original poster knew exactly the angle they were vying for, so I don't feel sorry for their post being hijacked.

and in addition, you're wrong about the schluby guy being a joke all the time. oftentimes, even if we're not talking the "sexiest" man, he'll get the girl anyway because ultimately his looks don't matter. you almost never see that the other way around. in male roles, even ugly males, looks are secondary to their accomplishments.

Oh for the sake of Christ's bloodied corpse, why can't we just say that men and women both deal with negative societal expectations and images? The idea that Kevin James and Homer Simpson are positive role models is fucking absurd. But more to the point I don't understand why we need to insist that in all ways men never have anything bad. It's ridiculous. Of course culture imposes strange and unrealistic expectations on men as men. It imposes strange and unrealistic and harmful expectations on just about everyone. Why should men be any exception? Of course at the same time it's also true that women suffer far more from those images but denying that men have problems in no way helps prove that. It's fucking ridiculous. Jesus Christ. No you're right no men anywhere have gotten any idealized images of male behavior or physical for that are harmful from the media. For fuck's sake.

ok I can usually turn around and ignore religion-based curse words but

"Oh for the sake of Christ's bloodied corpse"

really?? can you not?

(yes I know, Oppressed Christian blah blah, DISCLAIMER: I am not oppressed, I just find it very disrespectful. you can say what you want but please consider that)

Oh I do apologize, sorry. Fwiw it didn't come from a place of... Certainly not from a place of consciously trying to be disrespectful towards religion. But I've been spending a lot of time lately reading about the medieval Christians and their use of religious oaths which are really fascinatingly intense and I just got caught up in that mindset. Sorry again for any unpleasantness.

Because the beaten and bloodied body of Christ actually is very important to my beliefs, and the beliefs of Christians in general, and represents a sacrifice of immmeasurable pain.

Also, it's one thing to constantly throw "Jesus" around (I ignore that even though I don't like it) because clearly it's just a curse word to some people, but you have to be thinking about it to some extent to use something so specific as a curse, and hopefully realizing that you're talking about something that's really gravely important to many people.

For the record, I'm not upset about it any more - anon apologized and all is good. Just trying to provide an explanation for your question. :)
